Rebel Diaz, a fiery hip-hop group based in Hunts Point, performed in Denver on Tuesday in the shadows of the State Capitol. With their police bashing lyrics, and Black Power hand signals, they're one of the most controversial bands around. Think Rage Against the Machine with rhymes.
When I showed up, a crowd of about 50 were dancing to a song called "Handcuffs" which dissed cops and the curse of gentrification the band say is sweeping the South Bronx. Perhaps the song's title is related to an incident in July, when two Rebel Diaz band members were arrested for coming to the aid of a street vendor police were harassing. I should add that they're actually pretty good - regardless of what you think of their politics. I was impressed.
