Bronx Sports Roundup: Red Hot Gardner, New Fordham Baseball Coach, and More

Yankees' Gardner the Great
Yankee speedster Brett Gardner has been on an absolute tear since the All Star break, and River Avenue Blues breaks it all down. He's batting over .500 since the Midsummer classic. Since the start of the 2010 season Gardner been one of the most productive players in all of the majors, with only a handful of players besting his production since then. There's even been talk of sliding him into the leadoff spot, moving Yankee captain Derek Jeter down in the order. Watch some of the gritty outfielder's best moments:

New Coach For Fordham U's Baseball Team

Fordham University's storied baseball team just got a new head baseball coach. Kevin Leighton is taking over in the Fordham dugout after six successful seasons as coach for Manhattan College. Leighton led Manhattan to six straight 30-plus win seasons and won the Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year this year. Leighton is taking over after former Head Coach Nick Restaino announced he would not return in order to "pursue other opportunities." Fordham is coming off a 31-23-1 season that ended with a 14-inning loss to Xavier that cost the team a playoff spot.

Bronx Flavor to Dominican Hoops Team
We mentioned this in the news roundup earlier, but in case you missed it. Kennedy High's Jason Nunez will be one of six tri-state-area basketball players competing for Dominican Republic under-17 national team at at the Pan American Games. Another Bronxite, St. Raymond's High School basketball coach Oliver Antigua (brother of Orlando Antigua, a Kentucky University assistant under John Calipari), is coaching the team. Some of the American players are visiting their ancestral country for the first time.

Gridiron Girls?
Is a girl's football team coming to your school? The Public Schools Athletic League is considering organizing a flag football league for girls. With coaches and potential players already expressing interest and a high turnout at a clinic this past spring, the girls could hit the gridiron as soon as next spring if there are enough participants. The goal, according to the PSAL, is to get more city students involved in sports.
