Yesterday was Food Day in New York City, and Sen. Gustavo Rivera used it as an opportunity to continue to push his Bronx CAN Health Initiative at the Academy of Mt. St. Ursula in Bedford Park and to announce that he's lost 16 lbs. of the 20 he pledged to lose at the start of the initiative.

Story Of The Day: Hometown Boy Makes Good
Bronx native Kemba Walker, the 20-year-old basketball superstar that's led the UConn Huskies to the NCAA championships, graces the cover of today's New York Daily News. Walker is an inspiration to those in the Soundview neighborhood where he grew up, the story says. He'll take the court tonight with the rest of the Huskies to face off against the Butler University Bull Dogs. More here.

Former Bronx State Sen. Guy Velella died this morning after a battle with cancer; he was 66 years old. Velella served in Albany for decades before a bribery scandal ended his political career.

The first Montesorri public charter school to open in New York City will be in the Bronx this fall, in Mott Haven. The schools are known for their unique, hands-on learning techniques.

Parking tickets are becoming a major expense for business owners in the city. One Bronx trucking company spent $450,000 in parking tickets and legal fees last year, according to the News.
