Bronx Events: Free Outdoor Music, Tonight

There are few things better about summer in the city than the seemingly endless bevvy of outdoor concerts. And what's better about an outdoor concert than when they're free? You've got your pick of two taking place tonight right here in the Boogie Down.

At 7 p.m., Wave Hill and the Bronx Council on the Arts will host another installment of their Bronx Beat concert series. Tonight's show features a performance by guitarist Christian Diaz; the show is free with the cost of admission to the Wave Hill grounds. You can also head down to Crotona Park to see Garifuna group Xctasy take the stage, starting at 7 p.m., as part of the CityParks Foundation's SummerStage lineup. Call (212)360-2777 or visit www.summerstage.org.

Bronx Events: Italian Concert at Belmont Library

The Belmont Library and Enrico Fermi Cultural Center, at 610 East 186th Street (near Belmont's "Little Italy") is hosting a free spring concert tonight, featuring a number of Italian artists including soprano Maria Fraccola, pianists Giovanni Valle and Marco Grilli, pop singer Anuhel and tenor Giuseppe Ruggiero.

Bronx Events: Bronx Real Estate Summit, Wednesday 3/30

This Wednesday, March 30, will mark the 2nd Bronx Real Estate Summit at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, 1040 Grand Concourse. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., and former Borough President Adolfo Carrion will offer opening remarks, and a number of real estate professional will serve as panelists at this networking event. Bronx Events: Celebration of Women Entrepreneurs

The Bronx Entrepreneurs and Business Network, an independent grassroots networking group, will celebrate Women's History Month with a spotlight on women and Bronx entrepreneurs tomorrow night at the PeaceLove Cafe in Melrose, 617 Melrose Ave. from 7-9 p.m.

The event will feature a panel discussion on networking, social media and other business strategies moderated by Clarisel Gonzalez, editor and publisher of PRSUN Communications. It is free and open to the public.

Bronx Events: Blizzard Response Hearing

Finally, an official outlet for all of your snow rage! The City Council is holding a series of hearings in every borough this month to get public feedback on the city's response to the big post-Christmas blizzard. The Bronx hearing will be held tonight at 6 p.m. at Hostos Community College, Savoy Building D, at 120 East 149th Street.

Similar hearings held already in the other boroughs have been tense and emotional, as speakers told stories of unplowed streets trapping ambulances and other emergency vehicles.

Bronx Events: Caribbean Garden Exhibit at the NYBG

Tired of this cold, miserable winter weather? Escape to the Botanical Garden, now through Feb. 27, for its Caribbean exhibit, featuring the garden's most tropical selection of flora. A lush display of banana and mango trees and exotic plants like the butterfly orchid will help you forget, even temporarily, that you have to go home afterwards and shovel your car out of a snow bank.

Tickets are half off for a limited time only, meaning $10 for adults, $9 for students and seniors and just $4 for the little ones. The Garden will also being hosting a visitor photo contest of the exhibit starting this week; more details here.

Bronx Events: Community Board 6 Youth Talent Show

Tomorrow night, Community Board 6 will have its second annual youth talent show, this year inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr., and his message of peace. Here are some more details:

"The theme of the event is 'We Have a Dream.” One youth group will perform a skit on the topic of teenage dating and the hardships many youth of our time silently suffer. Along from the singing, dancing and poetry that will be showcased, we will have the five (5) youths that will receive this year’s Yankee Council Award read an excerpt of the 'I Have a Dream' speech as this conference is in honor and remembrance of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream for peace and equality."

Bronx Events: Cosmetology Open House

Tomorrow evening, the New York Hispanic Cosmetology and Beauty Chamber Of Commerce and Lehman College host a free open house for those interested in a career in cosmetology. Get tips on beauty techniques, barbering, spa salon operation, hairstyling, skin care, make up, manicure, and more.

MulchFest 2011 and Other Bronx Events

Nothing looks sadder on a post-New Year's sidewalk than all of those discarded Christmas trees piling up. If you want your tree to fare a better fate than the curb, you can recycle it through the Park Department's annual MulchFest, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday at designated parks across the five boroughs.

There are sixteen spots in the Bronx where you can drop off your tree. Parks Department workers will send it through a wood chipper and turn it into mulch that's used to nourish plants and other trees throughout the city. Locations are listed here. Certain sites will have wood chippers on hand, so you can take a free bag of mulch home with you to use on your block or in your garden.

Bronx Events: Register for BRAC's Winter Art Classes

The Bronx River Art Center is now accepting applicants for its winter session of art classes. Youth classes will run from January 10th through March 26th, and adult courses will run from January 17th through March 19th. You can apply online until Jan. 8 at their website, www.bronxriverart.org, or register in person at BRAC's temporary headquarters, at 2064 Boston Road at 179th Street, Monday through Friday January 3 - 7 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm and Saturday, January 8th from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.

Kwanzaa Celebration & Other Bronx Events

A community Kwanzaa celebration is taking place all day today at the Mosholu-Montefiore Edenwald Center, 1150 E. 229th St. The festival will feature food, dancing, arts and crafts, African drumming, live music and storytelling. Check out the flier for more details.

South Bronx Folk Festival & Other Bronx Events

The 1st ever South Bronx Folk Festival will be held this Friday and Saturday, 12/10 and 12/11, at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education at 928 Simpson Street in Hunts Point. The first of what will be a yearly event, the festival is meant to highlight the diverse cultures and folklore in the borough and will feature performances by Puerto Rican dance group Danza Fiesta and the Diversity in Arts and Nations for Cultural Education, Inc's Children's Dance Project.

Bronx Calendar: Barnes & Noble Children's Play Event This Weekend

Barnes & Noble, on Baychester Avenue,
opened a new children's playspace.  

Lots of exciting stuff happening in the borough this week/weekend. On Saturday, the Barnes & Noble in the Bay Plaza Shopping Center is hosting a special children's event to introduce a new interactive play space at the store, just one of five to open across the country (see photo). There will be interactive games,  activities and a raffle.

Bronx Events: Salsa Star Oscar D'León At Lehman

Venezuelan-born salsa musician Oscar D'León performs at the Lehman Center for Performing Arts tomorrow night, Nov. 20, for a concert at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale and range from $55 to $85. D'León brings his string of hits to Lehman on this electrifying night including “Llorarás,” “Detalles,” “Mi bajo y yo,” and “Me voy pa Cali.”

Bronx Events: Discovery H.S. Farmers Market This Thursday, 11/18

Student at Discovery High School in Kingsbridge will be hosting a farmers market this Thursday, Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., featuring organic vegetables, herbs and plants that they grew themselves with green walls and in-classroom gardens. A news crew from CNN will be on hand to film the market for a segment they're doing on the school's gardening program, which started as part of a lesson in teacher Steve Ritz' living environment class.

This is not their first green foray--the students already hosted two luncheons last year, serving only food they grew and harvested. Last week, they built garden installations (with their own irrigation systems!) in the NBC Experience Store, on 49th Street in Manhattan (see above photo).

New Musical at Pregones, & Other Bronx Events

A new musical, "The Harlem Hellfighters on a Latin Beat," opens tonight at Pregones Theater, featuring Puerto Rican singing sensation Danny Rivera. The play tells the story of a group of Puerto Rican musicians recruited to join an all-black regiment of during World War I.

Bronx Food & Sustainability Coalition Meeting, & Other Bronx Events

The Bronx Food & Sustainability Coalition will meet tonight, at 6:30 p.m., at the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center at 2007 Mapes Avenue. Karen Washington, lifelong Bronx urban gardener and President of the New York City Community Garden Coalition, will discuss how community gardens can play a vital role in combating food insecurity, promoting healthy diets and providing an untapped source for green jobs.

Bronx Culture Trolley & Other Events

The Bronx Culture Trolley returns tonight, as it does the first Wednesday of every month, to take riders on a tour of the borough's top arts and cultural destinations. The tour is free, and departs from Hostos Community College's Longwood Art Gallery, at 450 Grand Concourse, at 5:30 p.m. The trolley, and many of the venues along the way, are wheelchair acessible.

Bronx Events This Weekend

The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!) has two events taking place this friday and saturday nights.

Tonight, choreographers Richard Rivera and Whitney V. Hunter share an evening of bold contemporary dance. Tomorrow night features "Mujeres Bomba," an evening of Bomba-infused female dance performances (see photo at left).
