A Deserved Award

My colleague and collaborator Bernard (Buddy) Stein was given a well-deserved award last night from the Bronx River Alliance for his work on the Hunts Point Express, a monthly community newspaper that covers Hunts Point and other neighborhoods in Community Board 2. With his students at Hunter College and the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, Buddy and his community editor Joe Hirsch, a former student, put out the Express and the Mott Haven Herald which debuted last spring in Community Board 1.

In his acceptance speech, Buddy pointed out that the "duty of a great public university [like CUNY] is to serve [the communities of the city]." Buddy has done a tremendous job of helping CUNY fulfilling that responsibility.

We're proud to be partners with Buddy in, as he mentioned last night, a remarkable endeavor involving a total of 5 nonprofit community newspapers in the Bronx.

The award ceremony was part of a fundraiser for the Bronx River Alliance held at the gorgeous Hunts Point Riverside Park.

Congratulations to Buddy and all of his students who make the Express and the Herald possible.

Hunts Point Express On-Line

The latest issue of the Hunts Point Express is on the streets and 0n-line. The Express is published by Bernard Stein (former Riverdale Press editor and owner) and his journalism students at Hunter College.

Meant to post this much earlier than now, but a new issue of the Hunts Point Express, a nonprofit paper edited by our good friend, Bernard Stein, is on-line with stories about a housing battle, about outlaws turned entrepreneurs, and on cleaning up the Bronx River and adventure on the East River. Check it out!

Oh, and have you noticed that we have a bit of a nonprofit journalism movement going on here in the Boogie-down Bronx at the hyper-local level? Where else have you heard of 4 nonprofit community newspapers in contiguous communities with populations of at least 125,000 each?

Hunts Point Express

Bernard Stein, the Pulitzer-prize winning former editor (but still co-owner) of the Riverdale Press, started the Hunts Point Express with his students at Hunter College earlier this year. Like the Mount Hope Monitor, it's primarily an on-line paper, but there have been a couple of print editions and the latest just hit the streets.
