The Urban Assembly for Applied Math and Science, at 1595 Bathgate Ave., was recently honored as one of six schools in the nation to receive the 2009 Intel Schools of Distinction Award. An already prestigious award, Intel’s choice of the Urban Assembly for Applied Math and Science is an especially noticeable one when compared to other chosen schools.
The Bronx school, which started in 2004, works to prepare kids for college in one of the poorest congressional districts in the nation.
While less than 1 percent of Urban Assembly parents have 4-year college degrees, according to the school, about 75 percentof Urban Assembly students are expected to graduate and earn a 4-year college degree.
On top of that, the Urban Assembly offers its services to anyone who applies, allowing students to attend school without any prior academic screening.
When nominated for the award in April, the school received a $2,500 prize. Now, after receiving the award, the Urban Assembly will get an additional $10,000 from Intel and an award package priced at $200,000 that includes curriculum materials, resources, and hardware/software prizes.
