At 110, A Bronx Church Tries to Reinvent Itself
Editor's note: Been meaning to post this story that first appeared in the May 4 edition of the Norwood News. So here it is. Photo slideshow by Adi Talwar. See more of Adi's work at rawlat.com/adi.

If not for an official from a faraway West African nation, the Church of the Holy Nativity in Norwood would have seen its 110th birth year come and go without so much as a peep.
“One of our wardens from Sierra Leone got us to celebrate our 110the anniversary,” says Richard Kelly, a longtime parishioner.
That Holy Nativity, an Episcopalian congregation, was reminded of its lengthy local history by a man from Sierra Leone, says a lot about the state of the church. Some long-standing church members, like Kelly, remain. But like many area churches, Holy Nativity’s numbers have shrunk and its congregation has diversified racially and ethnically.
Holy Nativity sits planted on the corner of Bainbridge Avenue, right where the street takes a hard turn south at 204th Street, with its stone structure and wooden doors overlooking the neighborhood as it has since 1906. The congregation moved there from its original location a few blocks away on what is now Mosholu Parkway.
“My parents were married in the church,” says Ruth Dittmar, who has attended Holy Nativity since the 1930s. “I grew up going to this church.”

Here's Adi Talwar's photo slide show from The Aluminum Show, which made its New York City debut at Lehman Center on Feb. 6. Lehman Center is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary season. The New York Times' David Gonzalez wrote about the Bronx's premier performing arts center and its executive director, Eva Bornstein, in Sunday's Metropolitan section. (Special shout out to Adi and fellow Norwood photographer Joe Conzo for having their photos appear in the Times.)

Tour de Bronx in Pictures
Photo Slideshow by Adi Talwar
Some 5,000 people (a record crowd, according to the borough president's office) tackled the 15th annual running (wheeling?) of the Tour de Bronx yesterday. The ride was dedicated to superstar Bronx health advocate and biking enthusiast Megan Charlop, who was killed in a biking accident earlier this year.
Riders received free shirts from organizers and helmets from the DOT. The ride began at 161st Street and the Grand Concourse and stretched into the east Bronx via the southern coast of the borough. It ended with music, refreshments and some words from Charlop's family at the Botanical Garden.
“Tour de Bronx gives us the chance to show to thousands of people that the Bronx is filled with beautiful places to visit. Riding a bike around our borough is the healthiest way to see exactly what The Bronx has to offer,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. who rode in the event for the first time. “I want to thank the many visitors who participated on our tour and to keep the invitation open for them to continue experiencing our wonderful borough.”
Note: And don't forget to join the discussion about Bronx biking in the week's featured forum.
