On Robert Moses ...

We'll have much more to say here and in our print editions about the three concurrent Robert Moses exhibits now under way in Manhattan. For now, here' s a City Limits article that questions the revisionism inherent in these exhibits.
We've yet to hear much talk about the Moses resurrection here in the Bronx. So, let the conversation begin!

  1. The Riverdale Press commented kast week on the revisionist critics using the show to push a development agenda.

Here's how the paper ended its editorial:

"The vulgar, out-of-scale apartment buildings under construction today along the Henry Hudson Parkway and on nearby streets reconfirm Caro’s sad verdict that building without reference to a neighborhood’s character is destructive.

"Imagine a Riverdale planned and zoned thoughtfully, one that as Caro writes, would have had room for apartment buildings, but would have preserved its serenity. It might have taken a little longer to build a highway from Manhattan to the Bronx, but think what advantages could have been reaped if the builders had been willing to heed the wishes and the wisdom of neighborhood people.

"That’s what the debate opened by the reappraisal of Moses’s legacy is really about: whether the powerful will continue to regard the city’s residents as selfish, narrow-minded and unworthy of respect, or whether participatory decision-making will guide the evolution of New York."
