"BronxWorks Rocks" Fundraiser at Yankee Stadium

Next Thursday, BronxWorks will hold its annual fundraiser at the Hard Rock Cafe at Yankee Stadium from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

At the event, Bill Aguado (pictured), Sean Delany, and John Fouhey will be the honored for their contributions to BronxWorks and the borough at large.

Aguado is a BronxWorks board member and the president (and former executive director) of the Bronx Council on the Arts. As a cultural activist, he's helped design and implement the Bronx Cultural Trolley, the Bronx Recognizes Its Own (BRIO) awards, the Bronx Writers' Center, and more.

Delany is the executive director of Lawyers Alliance for New York, and a former BronxWorks board chair and legal counsel.

John Fouhey, of Davis Polk & Wardwell, does pro bono legal work for BronxWorks and is a former board member.

Among other things, BronxWorks helps place low-income adults in jobs, assists children and youth with college guidance services, helps families stay out of the shelter system, provides services to people with HIV/AIDS, and supports the growing immigrant population.  The organization used to be called the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Bill Aguado, Champion of Bronx Art Scene, in Times

In case you missed it on Friday (we were all out of the office so didn't get to post to the blog), David Gonzalez had a wonderful column paying tribute to Bill Aguado, who is departing the Bronx Council of Arts after three decades of service. Under Aguaudo's leadership BCA has built an incredible infrastructure for Bronx artists and art enthusiasts -- places for Bronx Artists to create and exhibit/perform their art, services to help artists thrive, and programs that honor and reward Bronx artists for their creations.

"Bronx is Burning" Comment Left Unupdated

Juan Gonzalez takes a look at how little love the Bronx is getting, despite being the home of the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium on July 15. He reminds of us of Howard Cosell's famous words at the 1977 World Series: "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx is burning." The least Major League Baseball could do, borough leaders say, is hold one significant All-Star week event in the resurgent borough. But they're getting the cold shoulder. Bill Aguado of the Bronx Council on the Arts says a group of Bronx nonprofit leaders wrote to MLB a year ago asking them to help the world see the new Bronx. All they got was a nasty reply ordering them to cease and desist using the term "All-Star," because it's trademarked.
