Bronx Events: Classical Guitar Concert, Blood Drive and more

The Bronx Council on the Art’s ‘Bronx Beat Concert’ series continues tonight from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Wave Hill. Renown Classical Guitarist Andrew Geddis, who has played for former Mayor David Dinkins, will perform. You’ll have to pay $8 admission to the grounds for adults, $4 for students and seniors 65 or older, and $2 for children over six, but the concert is free. In other local events: Twin Park Kids and Aquinas Housing is holding a blood drive tomorrow from 2 to 8 p.m. in honor of Daisy Perez, who while pregnant with her daughter, had to get several blood transfusions due to complications. The blood drive will be held at 961 Cassella Plaza, at East 180 Street and Vyse Avenue.

Bronx Events: St. Barnabas Hospital Blood Drive, Today

Councilman Joel Rivera, St. Barnabas Hospital and the New York Blood Center are hosting a community blood drive at the hospital's Hemodialysis Unit, at 451 Third Avenue, until 5:45 p.m. today.

From the press release:
The need for blood is constant. New York Blood Center alone requires over 2,000 volunteer blood donations each day to meet the transfusion needs of patients in close to 200 New York and New Jersey hospitals. Each donation of blood can help save 3 lives following component into red cell, platelet, and plasma separation. Car accident and trauma victims may need as many as 50 or more red cell transfusions.

Blood Drive in City Island in Honor of Injured Teen

The New York Blood Center is holding a blood drive on Monday at Grace Episcopal Church in City Island, in honor of Emily Sexton, a local teen who was hit by a car and seriously injured on Nov. 13.

Emily required a large amount of blood to keep her alive at Jacobi Medical Center. The New York Blood Center is asking Bronxites and others to help replenish the supply, and show support for her recovery.

NY1 reports a pregnant Bronx mother and her boyfriend face charges that the pair abducted the mother’s six children form their grandmother’s custody. Madeline Cotto, 28, of Burke Avenue, and her boyfriend, Malik Martin, 24, were arrested in Baltimore yesterday, where they had been living with the children.


This week the Daily News highlighted the 55 open building violations of 2126 Valentine in Tremont and the housing woes of former residents, the Berry family. City Councilman Joel Rivera has vowed to help the family, long deprived of electricity, with relocation efforts.
