Bronx Events: Classical Guitar Concert, Blood Drive and more

The Bronx Council on the Art’s ‘Bronx Beat Concert’ series continues tonight from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Wave Hill. Renown Classical Guitarist Andrew Geddis, who has played for former Mayor David Dinkins, will perform. You’ll have to pay $8 admission to the grounds for adults, $4 for students and seniors 65 or older, and $2 for children over six, but the concert is free. In other local events: Twin Park Kids and Aquinas Housing is holding a blood drive tomorrow from 2 to 8 p.m. in honor of Daisy Perez, who while pregnant with her daughter, had to get several blood transfusions due to complications. The blood drive will be held at 961 Cassella Plaza, at East 180 Street and Vyse Avenue.

Bronx Events: Fun Outdoor Summer Stuff, Tonight

If you're looking to take advantage of the great outdoors before the next two days of super-stifling heat hit (it'll be a manageable 80 degrees tonight), there are a couple of events taking place in the parks.

Flutist and Latin Grammy Award nominee Dave Valentin will perform tonight at Wave Hill, at 7 p.m., part of the park's "Sunset Wednesdays" and the Bronx Council on the Arts' "Bronx Beats" concert series. The show is free with admissions to the Wave Hill grounds ($8 for adults, $4 for students and seniors and $2 for kids over six.) Visit www.wavehill.org or www.bronxarts.org for more info.

For those with little ones, Friends of Crotona Park will be showing Justin Bieber's movie (they made a Justin Bieber movie?) "Never Say Never," at the park's amphitheater, at Charlotte Street and Crotona Park East. Show starts at 8 p.m.; come early to have your face painted by Chussie the Clown. The film is free, but bringing your own blankets and chairs is recommended. Call 718-716-1128, ext. 10 for more.

Bronx Events: Free Outdoor Music, Tonight

There are few things better about summer in the city than the seemingly endless bevvy of outdoor concerts. And what's better about an outdoor concert than when they're free? You've got your pick of two taking place tonight right here in the Boogie Down.

At 7 p.m., Wave Hill and the Bronx Council on the Arts will host another installment of their Bronx Beat concert series. Tonight's show features a performance by guitarist Christian Diaz; the show is free with the cost of admission to the Wave Hill grounds. You can also head down to Crotona Park to see Garifuna group Xctasy take the stage, starting at 7 p.m., as part of the CityParks Foundation's SummerStage lineup. Call (212)360-2777 or visit www.summerstage.org.

Bronx Events: Kids Spring Break Guide

New York City public schools are closed for spring recess this week through next Wednesday, April 27th. Here's our pick of Bronx, family-friendly events taking place until then. 

Spring Break at the Botanical Garden

The Garden is hosting a number of kids' activities and shows this week and next. An Earth Day festival this Friday, April 22, features an outdoor scavenger hunt, guided tours of the Native Forest, a lesson on earthworms and how to start your own compost pile. On Monday, April 24, the Bronx Arts Ensemble will perform a musical version of "Peter and the Wolf" at 1 and 3 p.m. For a complete list of events, visit www.nybg.org.

Kids Week at Crotona and Van Cortlandt Parks
Join the Urban Park Rangers for  a scavenger hunt on Thursday and a "Meet the Critters" session on Friday at the Van Cortlandt Nature Center; the group will also host "Animal Games" in Crotona Park on Wednesday. See the Parks Department's Kids Week guide here or call (718) 378-2061.

Animal Tales at the Bronx Zoo
This weekend, the Bronx Zoo brings all of your favorite animal characters to life. On Saturday the 23rd, Spiderman and his Marvel super hero friends will make an appearance, while bestselling children's author Michelle Knudsen reads from her book "Library Lion." Celebrate Easter Sunday on the 24th with a Rotten Egg Hunt featuring the cast members from Broadway's "The Addams Family." For more, visit the Zoo's events calendar here.

This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, visiting artist Miwa Koizumi shows you how to reuse colored plastic bags and recycle them into rain hats, rain gear and Earth Day flags and flowers for a festive Earth Day parade.

Fun at the Library

Every neighborhood branch of the New York Public Library hosts a litany of free events for children, teens and families. From story time to craft workshops, you can check out what's happening at your local branch at the NYPL's program calendar here, which lets you search by borough, age group and type of event. 

Barney Live at the Paradise Theater
Everyone's favorite purple singing dinosaur is visiting the Bronx this weekend, performing his "Birthday Bash" live show at the legendary Paradise Theater on the Grand Concourse with three shows on Saturday, April 23. Easter Egg Hunt at St. Mary's Park
Bring the kids out to St. Mary's Park, on St. Ann's Avenue at East 149 Street and Jackson Avenue, this Saturday for an Easter egg hunt from 1 to 3 p.m.

Upcoming Bronx Events June 7-14

Here's a list some things to do in the the Bronx this week:


The legendary salsa group El Gran Combo (pictured), along with La Excelencia, will be performing the Lehman Center for Performing Arts on June 11. The group 8 y Mas will be joining El Gran Combo on June 12. Both shows will be at 8 p.m. $35-$55 tickets are on sale. For more info call (718) 960-8833 or visit www.lehmancenter.org.

The Orchestra of St. Luke's will be performing an All-Mozart Concert on June 8 at Wave Hill, located on 249th Street and Independence Avenue. This is a free event and all attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations for NYC's homeless.

Wave Hill will also be holding a series of events this week: Friday, June 11, is Family Yoga Day. Members pay $15, non-members $20. One parent/one child. Each additional child is $5. Family Art Project Day on June 12 and 13. Rainbow Feathers of Clay will consist of drawing birds, then model a colored clay relief. The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!) begins its annual Out Like That! Festival, which celebrates gay pride in the Bronx, on June 10. Little late on this, but here's a few things to keep you up to date on your Bronx news.

The Boogie Downer's got some updates on the huge sinkhole that is currently blocking traffic on Webster Avenue, between 197th Street and Bedford Park Boulevard.BxNN blogger Greg Jost posted some pictures a little earlier.

Yesterday morning, some 1,500 students were evacuated from a Hunts Point educational campus that houses a handful of small schools when high levels of  carbon monoxide were detected.

Daily News columnist Michael Daly writes about Times Square shooting suspect and Bronx resident (Tremont) Rayvon Guice who he says has a history of gun play.

Gothamist sums up the whole Vanessa Gibson parking in the bike lane fiasco and the fallout.

Emmanuel Reyes, a Bronxite, pleaded "not guilty" yesterday of stealing money from the Tribute World Trade Center Visitor's Center.

The Riverdale Press has a story on how state budget cuts may affect some of the Bronx's major attractions, such as the Bronx Zoo and Wave Hill.
