Bronx Sept.11 Events
Here are a few events taking place in the borough this Sunday, Sept. 11 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. Let us know in the comments section if you've heard of something we've missed.
Bronx Community College, Meister Hall lobby, 2155 University Ave., 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. - The program will feature speakers from campus reflecting on their personal connection to 9/11. For more information, call (718) 289-5193.
Lehman College, 250 Bedford Pk. Blvd. W., at the College Walk outside Shuster Hall in front of the campus 9/11 memorial, 1 p.m. - The program will include a song by children from Lehman’s Childcare Center as well as “The Star Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful” sung by the Lehman College Community Chorus, also speakers, and concludes with the playing of “Taps.” For more information, call (718) 960-4992.
The New York Botanical Garden is offering free All-Garden Pass admission from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2011. All New Yorkers, particularly Bronx residents who may be in search of a way to commemorate the anniversary locally, are invited to enjoy the Botanical Garden as a beautiful venue that naturally lends itself to both quiet contemplation and family sharing. Add reflections to the memorial tree, which was planted in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden on the first anniversary (10 a.m. –12 p.m.) Hear readings of Jeannette Winter’s September Roses, a resource provided by New York Council for the Humanities, which tells a story of the ways people of diverse backgrounds came together to help each other in the aftermath of the tragedy. Bronx Events: Kids Movie Night at Bronx River Park
It's finally not raining out! In honor of that, head over to Bronx River Park tonight (one of the borough's loveliest parks, in my opinion--it has its own waterfall!) and catch an outdoor screening of the movie "How to Train Your Dragon," starting at 8 p.m.

Free Journalism Program for Bronx High Schoolers
During the semester, students will learn the fundamentals of writing, reporting, and photojournalism through classroom instruction and hands-on reporting in their own neighborhoods. We will take them on field trips - including the newsroom of a daily newspaper. And they will learn about community activism and civic responsibility, how their neighborhoods work (or don't), who has power, who doesn't and why.
Student work gets published in a special youth supplement called Bronx Youth Heard, which appears in Bronx News Network publications - the Norwood News, the Mount Hope Monitor, and the Tremont Tribune - giving youth a powerful voice.
We are looking for students of all academic abilities, but they should be highly motivated, love to write, be naturally inquisitive, and care about what's going on in their communities. Bronx Events: Basketball Tournament in St. James Park
This weekend is the 6th Annual Gardiner Memorial Basketball Classic Tournament in St. James Park (West 192nd Street and Jerome Avenue). The tournament will take place from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, and Sunday, Aug. 14.
The two-day tournament, run by The Gardiner Foundation, offers local Bronx residents the chance to watch some of the best street ballers from across the country compete for the title while enjoying free food, entertainment and giveaways. Also during the tournament, five lucky college-bound high school seniors will be awarded scholarships.
The Gardiner Foundation was established in 2006 by Dexter Gardiner, in memory of the loss of six of his family members in a horrific car accident on the Bronx River Parkway. His foundation has started a community outreach initiative that offers educational scholarships, financial support, emotional and spiritual guidance and burial assistance to other families in the community who have suffered a sudden and tragic loss.

Bronx Events: Crotona Community Cleanup This Saturday

This Saturday, August 13, the youth group at the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center and members of Community Board 6 are hosting a neighborhood cleanup event from 12 to 2 p.m., along Mapes Avenue outside the community center between 178th and 179th Streets.
The group will be picking up trash, and staff from the city's Department of Sanitation are installing a new wastebasket on the street. If you're interested in joining the effort, call CB6 at (718) 579-6990.

Bronx Events: Flamenco, Pickles and More at the Botanical Garden
Enjoy beautiful music in the tranquil surroundings of The New York Botanical Garden during the latest edition of the Waterlily Concert Series, tomorrow night at 7 p.m. (Before it starts, head over early to experience an extended viewing of the Garden’s popular exhibition, Spanish Paradise: Gardens of the Alhambra.)
Tomorrow's performance will feature a Flamenco Ensemble and the music will range from traditional flamenco to more contemporary jazz-infused compositions, combining old and new.
Also be sure to check out NYBG's "Pickle Me!" Event going on now until Aug. 26. Take a walk through the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden to learn about different plants that are pickled. Harvest fresh cucumbers and make your own fresh pickles to take home!

Bronx Events: Health Fairs & Screenings
It's National Health Center Week, and Bronx Community Health Network (BCHN) will be hosting a number of events at 10 Bronx locations to commemorate the occasion and raise public awareness about the health services they offer.
There will be a health fair tomorrow at Poe Park (Grand Concourse and East 192nd Street) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. featuring free health screenings and health information, interactive physical activity, nutrition demonstrations, and gifts.
On Wednesday, BCHN will offer free breast cancer screenings for women over 40 who have not had a mammogram in the last year. This will take place at the Comprehensive Health Care Center, 305 East 161st St., from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The group will also be hosting a number of informational sessions throughout the week at varying locations, on issues like childhood asthma and smoking cessation; a full list of events and topics can be found here.

Norwood Walks Aim to Build Community and Commerce

On Sunday, hundreds of local residents spilled onto the middle of E. 204th Street for the Weekend Walks event, which included shopping, face painting, fitness instruction and lots of kids playing in an open fire hydrant courtesy of the fire department.
Hosted by Community Board 7 and Mosholu Preservation Corporation, Weekend Walks is a city initiative designed to bring community and commerce together on streets throughout the five boroughs. On E. 204th Street, a two block stretch between Bainbridge and Hull avenues was blocked for shopping and a host of other activities.
Lowell Green, the chair of Board 7’s transportation committee, first learned about the Weekend Walks program last summer and signed the board up to help host the event over the winter. Green, however, was skeptical that the board could pull it off without a co-host. In the early spring, Mosholu Preservation Corporation (MPC), a nonprofit that manages affordable housing and promotes economic development in the Norwood area (and also publishes the Norwood News), teamed up with Board 7 to help organizing and promoting the event.
Michael Lambert, the deputy director of MPC, said he hopes Weekend Walks will help build momentum and interest for an E. 204th Street business corridor beset by two tragic fires in the past two years.
Representatives from several area businesses, including Ridgewood Furniture, Foodtown, Freilich Jewelers, McKeon Funeral Home, Papa John’s Pizza and the new Beso Lounge, participated in the event.
Weekend Walks continues the next two Sundays, July 31 and Aug. 7, from noon to 5 p.m.

Bronx Events: Classical Guitar Concert, Blood Drive and more
The Bronx Council on the Art’s ‘Bronx Beat Concert’ series continues tonight from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Wave Hill. Renown Classical Guitarist Andrew Geddis, who has played for former Mayor David Dinkins, will perform. You’ll have to pay $8 admission to the grounds for adults, $4 for students and seniors 65 or older, and $2 for children over six, but the concert is free. For more information, head to www.bronxarts.org.
In other local events: Twin Park Kids and Aquinas Housing is holding a blood drive tomorrow from 2 to 8 p.m. in honor of Daisy Perez, who while pregnant with her daughter, had to get several blood transfusions due to complications. The blood drive will be held at 961 Cassella Plaza, at East 180 Street and Vyse Avenue.

Bronx Events: Oval Park Clean Up Party Tonight
Friends of Oval Park are hosting a litter pick up party tonight, at Williamsbridge Oval Park, at 7 p.m. Come help pick up trash, hang anti-litter signs and get to know your neighbors better. Garbage bags will be provided, but feel free to bring your own.

Bronx Events: Fun Outdoor Summer Stuff, Tonight

Flutist and Latin Grammy Award nominee Dave Valentin will perform tonight at Wave Hill, at 7 p.m., part of the park's "Sunset Wednesdays" and the Bronx Council on the Arts' "Bronx Beats" concert series. For those with little ones, Friends of Crotona Park will be showing Justin Bieber's movie (they made a Justin Bieber movie?) Opinion: Lessons About Supporting Bronx Artists on the Eve of Paul McCartney's Bronx Concert

I felt so energized after a long day of pitching singer-songwriter Jann Klose to the media when Gregory, who runs the Boogiedowner blog, wrote me back, "Thanks for thinking of me and keeping in touch. I do enjoy your persistence in what you do." Then, after my neighbor read Frank DiGiacomo's mention of my artist's story in the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, she told me to check her post on Paul McCartney's FACEBOOK page, cheering support for Jann in his quest to open for the Beatle at Yankees Stadium this week. A few days later my friends at the BBC Merseyside, in Paul's hometown of Liverpool, UK, called, "Will Jann talk with our afternoon drive guy Billy Butler on July 13 at 10 a.m. east coast time?"
I've been working with Jann, who lives here in the Bronx, the past seven years. We've found support from people, media, and concert venues all over the world. He's performed in the Beatles' stomping ground of Hamburg, Germany (where he spent his teenage years, as well), and has performed in their hometown of Liverpool. A few critics have compared Jann favorably to McCartney, some to Lennon, he covered George Harrison's song "Something" live at BB King's, and opened for Marshall Crenshaw who played "John Lennon" in Broadway's BEATLEMANIA. Here in the Bronx, we've found more encouragement from the people and the media than arts' organizations and venues. A number of folks have taken road trips to his shows out of town, and people--of all ages--are telling their friends about his live concerts.
