Story of the Day: Former Council Speaker Turns Bronx Builder
Today's Wall Street Journal takes a closer look at Gifford Miller, a former City Council speaker and one-time mayoral hopeful who, according to the story, "has no interest in ever returning to politics." His new career path--real estate--has brought him to the Bronx, where his firm is attempting to rezone a swath of land in West Farms/Crotona Park to build a massive affordable housing complex.
We wrote about the $400 million project, which will consist of 10 high-rise buildings around the Cross Bronx and Sheridan Expressways, in the June issue of the Tremont Tribune, and some readers seemed wary of the plan. Read more here.

The two-alarm fire at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church this past weekend did not stop parishioners from attending Sunday service. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. gave his first State of the Borough address at the Evander Childs High School campus on Gun Hill Road on Friday. We'll have more coverage (including video) on this a little later today.
A 17-year-old Bronx teen was pronounced dead at the scene of a hit-and-run accident last week. A full investigation is under way.
Bowing to pressure from politicians and enraged customers, Cablevision and ABC came to a temporary agreement to restore channel 7 last night 20 minutes into the Academy Awards. Reuters has more information on how they resolved their ongoing fee dispute.
A Bronx man, Marcos Cruz, was fatally stabbed while trying to be peacemaker during a bar fight at Glen Roy's Sports Bar and Tavern on E.149th street. Kevin Velasquez was arrested on Sunday and is being charged with second degree murder. You can read more here.

A restaurant on 238th Street is doing its bit for world peace "one falafel at a time" by inviting local Jews and Arabs to monthly eat-and-greets.
Jurors have returned a guilty verdict in the second "Black Sunday" trial. The building manager and the corporate owner of 234 E. 178th Street were cleared of the more serious manslaughter charge in deaths of two firefighters in 2005, but convicted of criminally negligent homicide. Last Friday, two tenants who lived in the building were found not guilty of similar charges.
Seven firefighters suffered minor injuries following a fire in a two-story building on the Grand Concourse at 169th street early this morning.
Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr. and Councilman Joel Rivera are among those congratulating Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion on his finally finalized move to Washington D.C. Both are said to be eyeing his old job. In their latest issue, the Norwood News looks back at Carrion's seven-year tenure.
A much critisized cartoon in yesterday's Post has reminded one observer of a another controversial stretch by the same artist - one that depicted then mayoral candidate (and Bronx BP) Fernando Ferrer planting a kiss on the Rev. Al Sharpton's behind. You can see both cartoons here.

As Stadium Rises, Neighbors Wait for Replacement Parks
In 2005, the city said it would cost $116 million to replace two parks swallowed up by the new Yankee Stadium. As of last week, that figure had shot up to $195, some of which has yet to be explained.
Another concern - a more immediate one for local residents - is that the replacement parks won't open for some time, because of construction delays. Meanwhile, the stadium is expected to be finished ahead of schedule. Jose de Jesus, a high school student in the Norwood News' youth journalism program, has the story.

Adolfo Watch (cont'd): The Revenge of Community Board 4
Former Community Board 4 member Lukas Herbert and other Bronxites are waging a letter-writing campaign to the Obama transition team and Gov. Paterson opposing the possible appointment of Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion to be HUD secretary or U.S. senator.
Herbert and the other members of Board 4, who bucked Carrion and voted against the city's and Yankees' plan for a new stadium, were dismissed by the B.P.

Bronx Officials -- Well, Maybe Only Helen Foster -- Call for Yankees and City to Do Right Thing on Replacement Parks
NY1 has this report about "Bronx officials" calling for the city and the Yankees to hold up their ends of the deal on the delayed and diminished replacement parks that were promised in return for the taking of Mullaly and Macombs Dam Parks. But the only official quoted is Helen Foster.

According to the Village Voice, Highbridge residents are unimpressed with their new park, a temporary replacement for the much-loved Macombs Dam Park which was destroyed to make way for the new Yankee Stadium.
On WNYC New York Public Radio, this morning, State Senator José M. Serrano defended new DMV policies which will allow undocumented immigrants to apply for New York State driver's licenses. Listen here.
Bronx Democratic boss Assemblyman Jose Rivera, and his daughter, Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera, were in China earlier his month, with Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith. The delegation was looking at ways to encourage foreign trade, says the Associated Press.
The Bronx Institute for Career Training and Development, on Ogden Avenue, has been charged with selling fake certificates to unqualified home-health-care aides.
A man is dead and three people are injured following three separate shootings.
