Bronx Bursting with Music on Friday

As part of their Concert in the Parks series, the New York Philharmonic is performing Friday, July 11th in Van Cortlandt Park at 8pm on the Parade Ground. Pieces scheduled to be performed are Mozart’s Divertimento in D major, Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, and Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The performance will feature conductor Xian Zhang, with solos by violinists Sheryl Staples and Michelle Kim. Fireworks will follow the concert. Admission is free and no ticket is required. Also on Friday, July 11th, from 6pm to 10pm the Bronx Museum of the Arts will host the latest in their First Fridays! series (postponed to July 11th this month because of the 4th of July). This week’s event is entitled Harlem on My Mind, A Celebration of Jazz, Swing, and Tap Jams. The event will feature music from the Ray Abrams Big Swing Band, a 17 piece group that will play pieces from Quincy Jones, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and many others. The event will also feature the talented improvisational tap dancers of Hoofer’s House. The Bronx Museum of the Arts is located at 1040 Grand Concourse near 165th street (easily accessible from the 167th Street D train stop). The event will be held in the Lower Gallery of the South Building. Admission is free.
