Espada Coy on Republican Connection

What a difference a few days make!

In the run up to the primary, Pedro Espada's campaign sent out a mountain of literature to debunk claims he's a closet Republican. "Pedro is a great Democrat. He has never been a Republican" says one (see above). In another, Barack Obama and Espada are placed side-by-side as if they're in the same photo.

Now, with the primary over, he's suddenly become all coy as to which party he'll align himself with when he takes office (assuming he wins the November election). See here and here. Shouldn't he have made his position clear to voters before the election?

Espada's about-face is important for another reason. If he sides with the Republicans, the Democrats may struggle to retake the Senate.

The Daily News reports that he's been inundated with phone calls from politicians on both sides of the aisle. Espada, the paper says, is "The Most Popular Man in New York." And boy is he loving the attention.

  1. Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. is playing the same game. Meanwhile his campaign cruiser running through the streets of the East Bronx are claiming he is a "True Democrat". I truly hope that by playing both sides of the fence it comes back to bite them in the A**! Who are they really representing, themselves? Last time I checked the majority of the voters in The Bronx were Democrat.

  2. This is not about Ruben Diaz. What happened here is Jose Rivera's fault. He duped Gonzalez by clearing Espada to run so that another Rivera can get ready to run Bronxwide. He pulled Gonzalez' name off of critical palm cards, but told everyone that he was behind Gonzalez. He thought the indictment against Gonzalez would be the excuse but Riverdale and the 81st district pulled through for Gonzalez thanks to real leadership. They said it loud and clear..."we remain behind you Gonzalez." Now Pedro changes is tune a day after Primary Day. Typical! Blame Rivera for the lie and scheme. The question now becomes who runs against that piece of trash that sold out the dems. It's going to have to happen.

  3. If you know the Espada history this is not a suprise. I say all of his constituents in the 33rd Senatorial district need to watch him like a hawk and make sure he does the right thing. However, do not be shocked if he doesn't. He is after power regardless of your best interest.
