A rally is planned for tomorrow at the Bronx Supreme Courthouse to address the borough's staggering unemployment problem. Members of the Laborers' Local 79 Union are demanding that more local residents be hired for work on publicly-financed construction projects. Expected in attendance are Assemblyman Michael R. Bendedetto, Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson, Assemblyman Nelson Castro and Assembly Candidate Eric Stevenson. See the flier below for more.

Are they proposing to build the Armory? Sure sounds like it...
ReplyDeletethe promises of Bronx jobs on big projects have been out-and-out lies. are we finally wizening up?
ReplyDeleteI agree with GAX,it seems as if everything is being built by everyone but Bronxites! But I am equally concerned that too few Bronxites are in any of the unions in the first place, especially in construction.
ReplyDeleteIs local 79 from the Bronx? How about the membership? I don't know enough about them and I certainly support unions (some), but I am a little leery of supporting a group whose membership may predominantly not be from around here, especially when locals can't find work.
Eric Stevenson is a candidate for the state Assembly, not the Senate. And unless a miracle happens and a Republican is elected, he'll be filling the Morrisania seat now held by Michael Benjamin, who did not run for reelection.
ReplyDeleteMy apologies--thanks for pointing that out. Now corrected.
