In the last 24 hours, the Bronx has seen three people, in two separate incidents, fall victim to gunshot wounds to the head. Both incidents occurred near Bronx housing projects.
On Sunday afternoon, police found William Robles, 27, in front of Union Consolidated Houses in Morrisania with a gunshot wound to the head. Robles was transported to Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Then, early this morning at around 5 a.m., at the Soundview Houses, police discovered two yet-to-be-unidentified victims also with gunshot wounds to their heads. Emergency responders pronounced them dead at the scene. Police said one of the victims was a 30-year-old black man whose family had yet to be notified. The other victim was described as a black man in his 20s.
No arrests have been made in either case.
[Update: State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. issued a press release this afternoon condemning the shootings at the Soundview Houses this morning. He also said he was "concerned for the reporter, who according to the National Press Photographers Association, was struck in the face and hospitalized at the homicide scene today."
The Times reports that seven people, including the three in the Bronx, have been killed since Saturday night. Through Sunday, murders are up 15 percent citywide compared to this time period from last year (459 vs. 399 last year). Through October, which doesn't include these latest murders, homicides are up 19.8 percent in the Bronx, from 91 last year during through October to 109 this year.]

When are we going to look at the first 4 Compstat categories of violent crimes against "persons" [murder, rape, robbery, felonious assault] separately from the the crimes involving "property" [grand larceny, burglary, grand larceny auto]?
ReplyDeleteCitywide Year-To-Date - the week of 10/25-10/31/10 murders up 15.4, Rape up 15.1, Robbery up 5.4, Felony Assault up 0.6 but crime is down 1.10 because there have been "numerical" decreases in burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto. Look at compstat numbers as ingredients in a soup; the numerically fewer but more deadly first 4 ingredients are diluted by the the other three numerically greater non-deadly ingredients.
What is capturing our attention and literally killing us are the murders, rapes, robberies and felonious assaults because they are in your face crimes, up close and personal with devastating effects.
There were 2 rapes this year in the 52 pct. for 28 days and none last year for the same period 10/25/10 - 10/31/10 [http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/downloads/pdf/crime_statistics/cs052pct.pdf].
You might think this would be a 200% increase, but the NYPD lists a zero increase because they have to have a number from '09 to compare it with...they do not consider 0/zero a number to count up from. This must be comforting to the victims.
The police will continue to create a big numbers soup and tell folks like those in the 52 pct. -"Look at the big picture. Overall crime is down 1.55 at this point compared to this time last year." What about the year to date increases of 33.3 for murders, 18.2 for rapes, 0.2 for robberies, and 14.2 for felonious assaults? Does the 1.55 overall decrese trump these violent crimes with their dead, injured and traumatized victims?
