New from the Norwood News

It's here! A brand spanking new edition of the Norwood News hit the streets yesterday. Here's a look at what's inside:

An interview with presumptive BP Ruben Diaz, Jr., along with a look at his only challenger, Republican (and "Sopranos" alum) Anthony Ribustello.

A look at what local pols are doing (or not) to stave off the MTA's "doomsday" cuts.

A student-run newsroom has blossomed in the basement of the Mosholu-Montefiore Community Center: a profile of the the kids behind Teen to Teen News.

Some good news for local activists: a state budget which will tax wealthier New Yorkers to avoid deep cuts in human services.

An editorial on local activism around human trafficking.

A report on a man stabbed to death in the same Marion Ave. apartment building which was the scene of a still-unsolved murder in January.

News that Norwood might get a new school building (more on this below).

Plus a guide to local summer camps, our inquiring photographer, and more news and opinions, all of them online now.

  1. i love the norwood news. it's an outstanding community newspaper and vital to all of us. i haven't had a chance to read this new issue yet, but i will do so... cover to cover... as i do every issue.

however, there is a major story that this edition of norwood news ignored as did this blog
(and other media, too) and i can't figure out why.

last sunday assemblyman jeffrey dinowitz put out a press release indicating that an evacuation because of a bomb scare at the bronx HS of science did not go as well as possible because of a lack of support by the NYPD, FDNY, OEM, and DEP.

because of this, he claims - and the bronx science and UFT chapter agree - that in the case of a more serious incident, in particular a chlorine release at the reservoir, students and teachers would be put unnecessarily in danger.

this story is even more important for the norwood news to report in light of the ongoing controversy over the use of chlorine of the reservoir, a DEP official lying about it at an FMC meeting, and bx science requests for emergency planning.

again, the norwood news is an outstanding publication. but in this case? uh uh. they missed the boat on an important story.
