Bronx News Roundup, Nov. 9

Greg Van Voorhis, an English teacher at the Bronx School of Law and Finance was suspended by the Department of Education for handing out copies of Chuck Palahniuk's Guts to his class. The short-story, a particularly graphic one that includes scenes depicting adolescent masturbation, was deemed inappropriate.

Bronx local Shelly Huggins is filing a lawsuit against the NYPD, claiming that she was handcuffed and dragged from her home last December after refusing to present an officer with I.D in her own home.

A 15-year old was shot in the cheek by an undercover cop last Thursday outside his Williamsbridge apartment. The boy was seen by the officer brandishing a fake handgun. He attempted to flee into his apartment building after police identified themselves, and was fired upon.

A Bronx Catholic priest has been gaining attention for his hobby: designing and manufacturing high-end clothing.

37 suspects were arrested last week after "operation rotten apple" cleared several South Bronx housing projects of drug dealers representing two different organizations. Four firearms, $18,000 in cash, and 1,000 small bags of heroine were also seized.
