Q & A with Bronx Valedictorian Chris Sacco

Last week, we sat down with Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music valedictorian Chris Sacco (right), 17. Sacco, who was also president of his school's National Honor Society, told us: "I just want to help people and succeed in life." The following is the rest of our conversation. Read more about Celia Cruz's latest graduating class here.

BxNN: How did you get into Celia Cruz and what was it like your first year?

Sacco: I auditioned like everyone else, and like most kids it was scary at first. I did my first concert and I was nervous, but I had fun and also learned a lot.

BxNN: What instrument do you play and will you continue practicing after graduation?

Sacco: I play the saxophone. I’ve been playing sax since 6th grade now. I’ll always play till I die.

BxNN: What are your post-graduation plans?

Sacco: I plan on majoring in Political Science to help people with finances. I will be attending SUNY Fredonia this coming fall.

BxNN: Do you think of yourself as above average since you’re valedictorian?

Sacco: No, I think I just do my homework and try my best. I force myself to do my homework, even when I’m tired.

BxNN: What’s your favorite musical form to play?

Sacco: I love playing jazz even though I’m not that good at it. It’s very fun and free as opposed to classical.

BxNN: What was your most memorable experience of high school?

Sacco: Performing at Disney World, definitely. The trip there and the actual performance was very fun as well as getting our reward.

BxNN: What is a message you want to leave with the incoming freshman at Celia Cruz or anyone who hasn’t graduated yet?

Sacco: There are a lot of bad things you can get into in life. Don’t! And don’t slack off.
