Bronx News Roundup, May 12

City Island has a drug problem.

Efrain Gonzalez's ex-girlfriend, Lucy Sanchez, has reached a plea deal with the feds over her role in the stealing of $200,000 in taxpayer money, which ended up in Gonzalez's pocket. Gonzalez, the former state senator, pled guilty on Friday. He faces up to nine years in prison.

A firefighter who almost died in the "Black Sunday" fire of 2006 recently spoke to students at a school in Ilion, upstate New York, about his ordeal and the dangers of fire.

Yet more bad news for State Senator Pedro Espada. The Bronx DA has launched an investigation into his residency, according to CBS. As a senator, Espada is required to make his west Bronx district his primary home. While he claims this is the case, the evidence suggests otherwise. Bob Kappstatter of the Daily News has more on this, including news that someone is living in Espada's Bedford Park co-op, just not the senator.

A FDNY will close four fire companies over the next few months, including Ladder 53 in City Island. Previously, talk of 53's demise led to protests.

State Senators Jeff Klein and Ruben Diaz Sr. are sponsoring legislation that would raise the income limit for state's EPIC Health care program, which could allow thousands of additional seniors to enroll.

A sad story from the weekend. A hard-working taxi driver from Ecuador was shot dead by a passenger in Morris Heights in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police say the motive was robbery.
