Bronx News Roundup, May 5

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

In politics, State Senator Pedro Espada, the State's housing committee chair, is still sitting on the fence with regards to the ten tenant-friendly bills.

Newsday calls Klein a “suburban hero” for his plan to revive the STAR property tax rebate and perhaps champion other suburban issues.

Obama shortlists former Bronxite, Sonia Sotomayor, as Justice Souter’s replacement. Various editorialists mull over her merits and demerits. And more here.

Other Bronxites making headlines, for good and for bad:

Kassahun Kabiso, 23, an Ethiopian Native from the Bronx wins the Pittsburgh Marathon by 3 seconds, completing the 26.2 miles in 2:22:51.

Four men - three of whom are from the Bronx - have been nabbed by cops after allegedly stealing high-end hair products from pharmacies across the East Coast.

The Bronx Housing Court sees a spike in cases, approximately 2,300 more since 2007, as recently unemployed middle-class white-collar renters are unable to afford their apartments.

Descriptions of Loya Wala, the north side of Kandahar, Afghanistan: “As tough and low-down dirty as it gets,” and “extremely unsafe. Obviously,” and… “The Bronx.” What do you think – is it a fair comparison or grossly exaggerated?
