Malcolm Smith Calls Out Bronx State Senator Espada

This is pretty unusual -- the leader of the state Senate, Malcolm Smith, just issued the following press release, putting the pressure on Pedro Espada, a fellow Democrat, to register his campaign committee and pay his fines or face the consequences. As we wrote in the previous post, Espada owes $13,000 for failing to file six campaign finance disclosure reports, according to the Daily News.

“In light of Senator Pedro Espada’s recurring failure to appropriately file complete campaign finance records, I have instructed Senator Espada that he has one week to file his campaign committee with the State Board of Elections, as well as submit a written payment plan with a significant down payment toward past debt. Failure to comply with any of these instructions will result in immediate action against Senator Espada.”

  1. how come malcom smith is not equally concerned about espada's residence in mamaroneck? i'd hate to think it could be because he knows he has other colleagues with similar residency issues and doesn't want to open a can of worms.

wcbs-tv has been the leader on reporting about espada. they had the smith angle and also announced bronx DA robert johnson's interest in the matter:

it's incredible that this is the same district whose previous senator just plead guilty to serious corruption charges. sad.

  2. Espada is blocking important housing bills that will pass if allowed to the Senate floor, bills that significantly help *his own constituents* to better afford housing. Reason? The landlords have him in their pocket.
