A top official has asked Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, the Bronx County Democratic Committee chairman, to begin the expulsion effort. According to the Daily News' Bob Kappstatter, Bronx Dems are none-too-pleased they have to deal with this now, in what is already a busy political season. We'll have more on the this later today.

In more Espada news, it's looking like he could face criminal charges for allegedly misrepresenting the finances of Soundview HealthCare Network, the non-profit he founded, on state and federal applications.  Espada and several of his associates already face civil charges for allegedly stealing more than $14 million from the organization.

  1. Why reference Kapstater on Espada and leave out the headline on Pilgrim-Hunter's disability claim?

    It seems very biased.

  2. I have to say we agree with anonymous on this one.

  3. Why? B/c the Espada news is, well, new.

Kappstatter's Pilgrim-Hunter blurb doesn't add much to what we all learned about her work situation last week from BoogieDowner's post and the 100-plus comments readers attached to it. For the uninitiated, here's the post I'm talking about: http://boogiedowner.blogspot.com/2010/06/pilgrim-hunter-unable-to-work-but-able.html. We linked to it the following day in our news roundup.

For the record, if you care to search our site, you'll see that we often to link Kappstatter's weekly columns without referencing his first/main item. As far as I know, there’s no right way or wrong way of doing this. We're just looking to highlight stuff we think readers may be interested in seeing.

  4. I dunno. BxNN seems to link to everything on Espada's misdeeds. Then does its own follow ups.

But when the media covers Pilgrim-Hunters likely fraud, the links are posted late. Additional articles are ignored. BxNN does no follow up?

    Why the difference in treatment?

  5. Yuppers... there definitely seems to be a difference in treatment. Look at the past headlines for Pilgrim-Hunter vs. the others running for State Senate. This may have something to do with a subconscious bias fueled by the BXNN's editor's wife throwing fundraisers for Pilgrim-Hunter :

Of course, there is no law against this, it is just something to keep in mind when you read BXNN coverage of Pilgrim-Hunter.

  6. um, they linked to the boogiedowner post the day after folks. it would have been poor taste to rip the discussion from that blog to this one. the debate was already raging over there so I'm not sure where the bias exists here. let's not witch hunt with desiree here...and for the record, i am not a desiree a supporter--i actually don't think she's best qualified--but i don't think we need to reach and play the guilt by association card here.

  7. Um, usually they link the boogiedowner posts the same day. This time they waited until the candidate issued a response. Some might reasonably suspect spin control.

Maybe not. But there's no witch hunt. It does appear there is some level of bias. It likely may not be conscious, but still worth noting.

Adjectives for Desiree (including in headlines) seems to be consistently more positive than with others.

And why not ask follow-up questions to Pilgrim-Hunter. BxNN obviously has time to call Espada's office.

So what is new? We know for years Espada is dirty and the party doesn't like him. Questions about Pilgrim-Hunter are still being asked.

It's not a witch hunt to ask BxNN to get us the news, is it?
