Bronx Halloween Guide

Plenty of Halloween fun in the Bronx this week, leading up to the big day on Sunday. Here's a rundown of some haunted happenings taking place in the borough. Read more after the jump.


Halloween Hoorah at the Botanical Garden: now until 10/31, the Botanical Garden has a medley of Halloween events and treats in its Everett Children’s Adventure Garden. Join in rotating hands-on activities and demonstrations such as Creepy, Crawly Critter Exploration, Ghostly Leaf Rubbing, Applesauce Making, Cider Pressing, and weekend Halloween Parades. Plus, an unforgettable display of three of the largest pumpkins grown in the United States this year—each weighing over 1,500 pounds!

Friends of Woodlawn and the Lehman College Art Gallery bring you Photographing Woodlawn, a display of work by 26 artists featuring shots of the legendary Woodlawn Cemetary. Now through December. 

10/28: Halloween Candy Fun at the Mosholu Library, 285 E. 205th Street, at 4 p.m.

10/27 and 10/28: the Belmont Library, at E. 186th Street near Arthur Avenue, is hosting two Halloween celebrations for teens (Wednesday) and for all ages (Thursday). Come in costume for games and candy!

10/28 and 10/29: Kipps Bay Boys and Girls Club will host its 6th annual haunted house. Open from 4 to 9 p.m. at 625 Castle Hill Avenue.

10/29: Thriller Night from the Bronx Community Recovery Center. Join the center for a mummy making contest, "Thriller" dance off, Halloween candy and treats. 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

10/29--10/31: Halloween tour of the Woodlawn Cemetary, 6 to 8 p.m. Take a stroll at Halloween through the Woodlawn Cemetery with long-time Bronxites Petr Strand and Susan Walker and listen. Words of fact or fiction will be spoken at the sites of some who rest here. Where word fail music will speak. Flashlight required! Meet at the Jerome Avenue Entrance.

10/30 and 10/31: Boo at the Zoo--Halloween fun all weekend at the Bronx Zoo. 
Enjoy hay mazes and hayrides, pumpkin carving demonstrations, puppet shows, magic shows, and live music. Don't forget to visits the bats and other critters.

10/30: Pumpkin Festival and Halloween Spooktacular at St. Mary's Recreation Center, 450 St. Anne's Avenue. Pumpkin carving, painting, popcorn, cotton candy and other halloween fun.

10/31: Thriller on the River--Join the Bronx River Alliance for a canoe ride through the Bronx River Forest, past the Botanical Garden and end at the Bronx Zoo dressed as your favorite character, then remain in persona for the Halloween event at River Park in West Farms.

10/31: Howl-O-Ween, a canine celebration at Van Cortlandt Park. Bring your pet pooch! Come in costume (both of you) and join in the family fun! Costume contest for the most original, scariest, funniest, and pet/owner lookalike. Enter on Broadway and Lakeview Place.

10/31: Lehman College Community Band presents Halloween Haunts. Selections for Concert Band featuring the many shades of the season. Free at 250 Bedford Park Blvd.

    Thriller on the River sounds awesome! I really have to travel more.

  2. The giant pumpkins at NYBG are fun, and we heard that they are going to make giant jack-o-lanterns out of them. But the carvings pictured in the post are not actually pumpkins. They are hand-carved (by a Bronx artist we were told) styrofoam "funkins." It is visually striking, but I couldn't shake the disappointment once I discovered they were not real.

  3. @Nick-the giant pumpkin carving starts this Friday. According to a press release, Scott Cully, who already holds the Guinness World Record for carving the largest pumpkin, will attempt to break it again this weekend by spending two days carving an 1,810 pound pumpkin at the rate of 100 pounds an hour. Should be quite a sight.
