Bronx News Roundup: Oct. 13

Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. Here's the Bronx news floating around on Columbus Day.

Great story in the Sunday NY Times about Bronx dancer David Steele and his Subway Entertainment crew. If you're ever on the D train, you've seen these guys and you've probably given them money. They're impressive.

Here's the story on the most deadly fire in New York City since the fire that killed 11 African immigrants in the Bronx in early 2007. On Saturday, five people, including a married couple and their three young girls, were killed in Chelsea. A 10-year-old boy survived.

The Daily News reports on how the Bronx Community College is helping get people into the workforce.

A Q&A with "Sopranos" part-timer and native Bronxite Carl Capotoro, who recently penned a memoir about growing up "Italian, gifted and gay" in the Bronx.

On Friday night, a Bronx woman allegedly stabbed her abusive boyfriend to death in Mt. Eden.

A judge awarded a Bronx woman $6.5 million after doctors removed her left breast, despite the fact that the cancer in it had been cured.

In an example of the slowing housing market in the Bronx, new one-family houses in northeast Bronx are now being looked at by social service organizations looking to provide group homes for their clients. The local community boards aren't happy about it.

And finally, a story about volunteers helping put together a massive bamboo sculpture at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx.

  1. Hi, I have a slug at harlemface.com about the appearance of author, Ivan Sanchez, "Next Stop." Ivan is of Puerto Rican heritage, and he escaped the Bronx just before being forced to commit a crime for revenge.

He is speaking Thursday Night, Oct 16, 7 pm at the Baychester Ave., Barnes and Noble.
