Canadian Radio on Foreclosures in NYC highlights Fordham Bedford

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Radio (think Canadian NPR) came to the Bronx last week to find out about how the financial crisis is affecting neighborhoods througout New York City. Reporter/Producer Deen Karim took a walk with me through some of the streets of Fordham Bedford to look at foreclosed homes and talk about the impact they are having on the neighborhood. Listen here at Part 2: Broken Dreams.

  1. Have we forgotten that Community Organizations and local Churches helped some of these homeowners get the bogus financing and now what are they doing to help them out of their mess.
If the Congregants move out of the area, the churches lose members and money. It would be in their interest to help the people losing their homes.

  2. Sankofa: What community organization helped people into bogus financing? I haven't heard of it happening. Please explain your comment.

  3. Sanfoka: Be specific about these churches and mention them by name. Our Lady of Refuge and St. Philip Neri did not help homeowners get bogus financing; predatory brokers and small developers were the ones lined up to peddle these dubious financial products. UNHP rang the alarm on these scammers and reached out to local Catholic parishes offering help to victimized homeowners. For the record, the NWBCCC has not had local affiliated community groups in Fordham Bedford for several years.

By the way, it's nice to have our name back, Fordham Bedford. The choice of North Fordham was more than somewhat arbitrary and unilateral.

    Msgr. John Jenik
Pastor of Our Lady of Refuge
