Bronx Events Through Monday, Dec. 14

Vintage photographs from the early 1980s, entitled "Childhood in the Bronx," are being showcased by the Leonard Lief Library at Lehman College on a new Web site. The artifacts are part of an oral history project shown in 1986 that were digitized from black-and-white film, capturing children in the Bronx from 1895 to the early 1980s, all done by Georgeen Comerford.

The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will commence tonight at 6 p.m. at Center Roadway, between Bainbridge Avenue & Moshulu Parkway. Entertainment includes Bronx's very own Santa Claus and the voices of St. Brendan's Choir. Refreshments will be served.

An Urban Archaeology Trek of the Original Bronx River Parkway will be led by Nestor Danyluk, from the Bronx Historical Society, as he retraces the 5-mile-long steps of the original parkway in the Bronx. Meet at the Rainbow Diner at 2195 White Plains Road promptly at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12th to start the journey. Fee is $15 per person ($10 for society members).

The Academy of Mount St. Ursula is hosting a Christmas Flea Market for the month of December to "provide an alternative venue" to managing the holiday shopping. On sale Saturday, Dec. 12th in the school's cafeteria at 330 Bedford Park Boulevard from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be toys, clothes, books, and much more.

St. Philip Neri's School will be holding a Holiday Flea Market on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12th and 13th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m at 3031 Grand Concourse. Vendor space is available, please call 347-726-5452 for more information.

Lehman College for the Performing Arts will feature soloists from The Orchestra of the Bronx and The Bronx Opera Chorus performing "Handel's Messiah" on Sunday, Dec. 13th at 3 p.m. A Taste of The Bronx will be there to give the audience free samples of various local cuisines. Riverdale Choral Society's fall concert will be held on Sunday, Dec. 13th at 3:00 p.m. at Christ Church Riverdale located at West 252nd Street and Henry Hudson Parkway East. Admission is $15 ($13 with a Bronx Cultural Card). 

A St. Nicholas Celebration of song and storytelling at Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum will describe the arrival of Dutch sinterklass, who brought candy and fruits to good children, and lumps of coal to bad children of colonial New Amsterdam. The event will take place at the mansion on Shore Road Pelham Bay Park, near the Split Rock Golf Course, on Sunday, Dec. 13th at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Free tickets can be reserved by calling 718-601-7399, only 5 per person. 

The community is invited to a special briefing on school overcrowding, presented by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., where presentations will tackle a proposed 5-year Capital Plan put forth to lessen the problem. The presentation will be held on Monday, Dec. 14th at 6 p.m. at the Bronx County Court House at 851 Grand Concourse, and will include a strategy session by Leoni Haimson of Class Size Matters.

Community Board 7 will hold a Traffic & Transportation Meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14th at the Community 7's Board Office at 229-A East 204th Street. Call 718-933-5650 for more information.
