200 People Show Up To Celebrate Life of Megan Charlop

Some 200 people gathered around in a big circle at the north entrance to Williamsbridge Oval Park to celebrate the life and share memories of community health advocate Megan Charlop, who died in a biking accident yesterday morning.

We'll have more on this in next week's edition of the Norwood News. But here's a quote from Charlop's colleague at Montefiore Medical Center, David Appel, who kicked off the celebration with a few words and memories.

Appel said that at the time of her death, Megan was "Totally rocking, feeling great, involved in a million different things. She was going to get every kid in the Bronx to graduate from high school and go to college."

He said she "left on good terms with everybody" and called her an "indomitable spirit."

Dozens of others echoed these statements with stories and kind words of their own. Several people started their memories off with: "She was my hero."

  1. I'm trying to find out what high school she went to in Great Neck....

  2. Meg attended Great Neck South High School and graduated in 1970. In the turbulent and trying times that were the 60s, Meg was an upbeat, well-liked straight shooter. When I ran into her at our 37th high school reunion, it was like nothing had changed - in the best sense.

  3. Meg and I grew up on the same street in Great Neck and her house with it's play house in the back yard was always where all the kids were, including her brothers David and Gordon. I was deeply saddened yesterday when I heard of this horribly tragedy and offer my prayers and sympathy to her entire family.

  4. I had the privelege of serving with Megan on the M.S. 181 Parent Association. If every parent had her level of commitment and involvement, our schools would be much better places.

  5. My heart is broken over the loss of my colleague Megan Charlop. I am still in shock and can't believe we've lost someone so special and genuine all too soon. Megan had always encouraged me to ride my bike, we even talked about going on a biking adventure together one day. I'm saddened that now, that day will never come. I will always admire Megan's intense dedication to the Bronx community, families, children, health and her spirited personality. My prayers are with her family and all of us, her friends and admirers.

  6. Thanks for providing the high school information. I too went the GN South and cycle daily. I read of the tragedy on Streetsblog, and felt compelled to submit it to
Planetizen, which led me to the Daily News article indicating her Great Neck youth.

Every cyclist, I believe, has the fear of being doored. I’m so sorry her life was cut short. She really made a great contribution to her community.

  7. Mi amiga, Megan. May God Bless you always. I would have loved to talk with you again! Couple of years have passed before I learned about the sad news, but one thing I know for sure... you were good to me, and I will always remember the time you defended my rights when I was in a vulnerable situation. I am not surprised to find out that so many people respected you and loved you. God saw everything, and I know you are in good standing before HIM. Rita
