Street Renamed After Popular Pastor

On Saturday, a Bronx block was renamed 'Reverend Jessie Woodhouse Place' in honor of a pastor who died last year, aged 99.

The block, on Bush Street near East Burnside Avenue, is home to The First Bible Church of the Lord’s Mission, and it was here that Woodhouse served for the last few decades of her life.

The day began with a early afternoon cook-out attended by more than 100 local residents and congregants. Later they piled into the tiny church for a remembrance service, punctuated by many a Hallelujah and Praise Jesus. Afterwards, the street sign itself was unveiled.

Woodhouse didn't just talk love, she demonstrated love, those that knew her said. She ran a food pantry, established a bible school, visited the sick and infirm, did missionary work in Africa, and more.

"She was such a wonderful person to the neighborhood," said James A. McGraw, the church's current pastor, who worked with Woodhouse for nearly 40 years. (McGraw is pictured above, third from right, and below, with his hands aloft)

Council member Maria Baez (above center), who submitted the renaming request to the City Council, said the new street name would serve as a constant reminder of Woodhouse's contribution to her congregation and the wider community.

  2. It is great that this great pastor is remembered in this way. If anyone knew Rev. Woodhouse, they would know that she was a loving and caring person of our community. If your going to comment please don't make it political, respect this Reverend's Contributions to our Community. It is becoming annoying that everytime something good is happening in the community, bloggers are trying to politicize the event because Baez has something to do with it. Pastor Woodhouse will always be remembered in our community.

  4. All of you Maria supporters who bash Rev. Cabrera for running against her Maria...and bash him, make false accusations. Who also has done much in the community and his church...so it's OK to disrespect him????????

You talk about respect! Give me a break!

  8. I agree with the last posting. Yes it's great to have street name changed/added as a memoire of those who have worked hard and are admired by many.

But, that will not change a neighborhood. All of a sudden Maria is out...give me a break. She needs to go back with her corrupted daughter and move to the Poconos.

Get this woman out of our District!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. ROTFL...(ROLLING ON THE FLOOR LAUGHING) Are you kidding me. Is this her "secret" tactic. To start showing up...taking pictures, re naming streets...LMBO (Laughing my butt off) Baez supporters should be embarrased. Very embarrased. This is a far reach to try and re-connect. RME (Rolling my Eyes)

  10. Maria should be on the "Shame on You" Yeah right, all of a sudden she appears. If she were to be re-elected (which won't happen) she will disappear for the next 4 years again.

    NO MORE BAEZ.....OUT.

  11. Jeez People.. Out of respect to the Reverend, and all of her congregants who will possibly read this article, let's lay off the Baez bashing.. I am an Anti-Baez advocate and I want her out just as much as the next person, but let's not be heartless.. The title of the article says it all.. That should be our focus here.. Not about Baez and her schemes.. Every Tapia and Cabrera supporter should send their posts to Maria's office directly.. lol..

I hope that God will replace the Bronx with 100 more Reverends like Woodhouse..
