It's (Almost) Official: After Re-Count, Cabrera Up By 69, Heastie Says

The machine votes for the 14th District Council race have been re-counted, all the paper ballots (absentee and affidavit) have been tallied and Fernando Cabrera is still in the lead over Maria Baez by about 69 votes, said Democratic County Chairman Carl Heastie in a phone interview.

Heastie said the Board of Elections will make it official on Tuesday.

At the end of Tuesday's primary, Cabrera, a pastor and college professor, was up by 90 votes. So Baez, who refused to concede on Tuesday, gained a little ground in the re-count, but not enough to make a difference. Instead of sticking around for the re-count (and City Council meetings), Baez went on vacation. That may be an indicator of what she thought of her chances.

"But this isn't about beating up Maria Baez," Heastie said.

It's about injecting "fresh blood and new energy" into the Council, he said. "Cabrera has a tremendous background. He's a pastor and a counselor, so he can relate to the struggles that families here are going through. And he's going to be present."

Okay, so based on that last remark, it's a little bit about Baez, who was beat up continually for her lack of presence at not only City Council meetings, but also local community board meetings.

As for the slim margin of victory, Heastie told Liz Benjamin at the Daily News: "I don't care if you win the Super Bowl by one point or 30, you're still champion."

We'll have full primary election coverage of the 14th and 1th district races in the Norwood News next Thursday.

  1. Mr. Heastie while a win is a win, 1,69 or 90. The community did not win. If you take Yudelka Tapia's 25% which she got on her own without any support and Baez 38% the voters in the district rejected you and all your powerful unions. You had to import a person from Pelham, NY who was proven he voted republican in 08 and not for Obama.
Without the union support your organization had nothing. You only benefitted because two women canceled each other out.
So you can enjoy your victory, but you can not stand tall. What it is, is a lost to our community, a community that you do not live in or care about.
THE REALLY WINNER IS YUDELKA TAPIA THE PEOPLES CANDIDATE.

  2. Heastie I am disappointed in you as the NEW COUNTY LEADER....You decieved the community by bringing in an outsider that does not understand the community. I wish you and County would have put more energy into making sure that more than 5,000 people voted in this race. When you are elected by only 1900(with many violations committed at voting sites) residents you are not a real leader you are just a person who was elected with the help of County.

  3. Wow. You are really a sore looser. The unions are people from our community. It is obvious you don't understand that. Cabrera was also supported by community leaders, churches and the local community. It is obvious that district 14 people were more concern about having real leadership than listening to the lies Yudelka was putting out on Cabrera. Yudelka's lies did not work. She lied about her endorsement of DC37 and Mason Tenders. She lied about Cabrera not being Dominican. I heard her say myself, "Cabrera IS a republican". She lied and people caught up to it quickly. She cheated by taking loans and not reporting. This is why many of the key people left her campaign just weeks before the election day. You are simply in denial. The people candidate is Cabrera. They spoke through their votes and this is something you can't take away from him.

Chairman Carl Heastie just became one of the most power chairman in the city. He has a winning streak that won't stop, because he is a man of character and integrity. It is sad how people don't know when to just simply congratulate someone when they win.

  4. Juan Quintana, you are so right. Cabrera won big time. Insurgents only win 3% of the time. The odds were against Cabrera and yet he won. This is a BIG win. It is being recognized even at city hall as a major victory. Cabrera IS the winner!!!

If you really care about the community, you will rally around Cabrera and help him revitalize and restore 8 years of neglect. I know it is not easy when someone's candidate losses, but this is about the people who are suffering and hurting. If you supporter a candidate and you did it because you care about your community, let's show it now when it counts.

  5. Hey Jordan can you give Assemblyman Jose Rivera the heads up. I got inside information that Heastie has another outsider a Pat Jenkins from Queens who has been looking for an apt. in the 78th AD to run against him next year. One outsider (Cabrera) is not enough. He must feel that the Bronx does not have qualified people so he imports them. He should just call himself County Leader, not Bronx County Leader. I would give you my name but I will loss my job. These people are mean and ruthless. They do not tolerate differences of opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Oh good I like Patrick Jenkins - he will make a great leader.

    He has my vote already!

  7. Juan do the math the community did not want Cabrera. THE COMMUNITY. Get it. It was not a victory. Tapia 25% Baez 37% = 62%THE COMMUNITY

  8. What Big Win has Heastie had. The BP race thats a joke (that was not a race) it was given to him. Crespo and Gibson thats another joke. He lost City Clerk, Bronx County Clerk. This you call powerful. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  9. Anonymous you need to go back to school. LOL...do the math, Cabrera won! Baez is finally out. Awesome. Oh, the joke is on you, Carl Heastie keeps winning.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The Joke is on the people of the community. That is what is so SAD. Let see how long it takes Cabrera to move back to his house in Westchester. And you still dont get it. We are aware he won. BUT IT DOES NOT MEAN THE COMMUNITY WANTED HIM. YOU DO THE MATH. AND HEASTIE HAS WON NOTHING. IF IT WAS NOT FOR THE UNIONS COUNTY HAS NOTHING.

  11. You sore losers don't get it. Let me correct some idiotic statements. Diaz wasn't a win? why didn't Joel run? cause he knew Ruben Jr. would wipe the streets with him. The City Clerk? Jose Rivera lost that with his idiotic machinations. County Clerk? Judge Gonzales lied and didn't follow tradition. Cabrera wasn't a big win? Look around the city in the other races....in multiple candidate races that incumbents lose...the winner usually wins with 40%. So far its Rainbow Rebels 7...dying Jose Rivera old guard 0. Start updating those resumes....the Rivera-Baez job program is done!!!!! hahahahahahahahahahahaha

  12. Ok, I'm flattered. But, it seems like people have the wrong idea. Simply being born and raised in the Bronx does not exactly qualify you to hold office. Either way, I would urge the person who says that I should be from the Bronx to work there to come and discuss it with me, better yet, debate me on Bronx issues. Carl Heastie surely knows that the Bronx has plenty of qualified people to do a host of things, and we hope more people step up to the plate and get involved. Fernando Cabrera is a hard working man, and he will be a great councilman. I look forward to working with him to continue to revitalize the Bronx.

  13. From the sore loser. I didn't lose anything. You are the one thats a loser cause you are loosing sleep over this crap. YOU CAN'T TAKE IT. Why do you find a need to keep that old man's name alive. First you said you won by 90 votes, now 69 what number for tomorrow. All I know is that I have become a Yudelka Fan. Go Girl Go. I predict you guys will have to work with Yudelka.

    ReplyDelete
  14. To Pat Jenkins. Glad to hear that you are flattered. Since you chose to speak just say yes or no. Did you move to the Bronx and to the 78th AD? Or are you still looking for an apt. Since Heastie knows there are qualified people. Why did he chose someone from Pelham, NY and a Republican. Why not a woman that raised her four children in the bronx, lives in district for 20 years and sent her kids to public school in 14th CD. Your candidate did not vote for brother Obama and raised his kids and educated them out of the 14th CD in Pelham, NY the richest county in the State. You will have to deal with Yudelka. You are looooosing sleep over this crap. GOOD NIGHT TAKE YOUR SLEEPING PILLS.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think living in the Bronx would be great. There are so many great neighborhoods in the Bronx to choose from. You would have to ask the district leaders of the 14th Council District why they chose Dr. Cabrera, although I know he will be a great councilman. I don't know Yudelka that well, but her campaign was based on lies and insulting to people's intelligence. The residents of the 14th District are not dumb and deserve to be respected with the truth. I am not losing any sleep. True Lies with Gov. Arnold is on, who can go to sleep on that?

    ReplyDelete
  16. You mean to tell me that Yudelka lied when it was her who exposed your candidate as being Republican, living in Pelham, educating his kids in Pelham, not voting for brother Obama cause he was a registered Republican. You are bordering on a sickness called DENIAL. Take your pills and go to sleep. Gofer.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dr. Cabrera is a Democrat who won the Democratic Primary. He lives on Sedgwick Avenue. His kids are out of school. Who is the one in denial? Stop hiding behind anonymous and speak for yourself. I will go to bed, but I never sleep. True Lies ended. Good night.

    ReplyDelete
  18. According to Yudelka Tapia he moved to Sedgwick Ave. 10 months ago. For the sole purpose of running for office. But you still refuse to touch on that he did not vote for brother Obama because 10 months before he was a registered Republican. I guess all that is acceptable because he is your guy. Is it ok for him but not for Espada.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh and by the way I can't I.D. myself because your bosses are mean and ruthless and they will get me fired. I have seen it done. I have kids to support.

    ReplyDelete
  20. You're Barack Obama's brother?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yudelka ran a hostile and deceptive campaign. She went around telling people that Cabrera IS a republican. Maria Baez did the same thing and the community quickly realized that there were being lied to by both of them. Cabrera has lived in the Bronx for 14 years, so get it straight. Both Yudelka and Baez supported Nelson Castro, who was the first coordinator for the Republican Party in Washington Heights and he was not from the Broxn. So please stop the hypocrasy and personal bandettas. Yudelka's closes former allies are now coming out and exposing all the fraud and cheating she did with the Campaign Finance Board. Why don't you talk about that? Assemblyman Peter Rivera said that this race would determined who had the real power and now that Chairman Heastie won again, there is spinning going on. The FACT is that the Chairman keeps winning and winning all of the races. By the way, Patrick Jenkins is a first class honest professional. Cabrera did vote for Obama. Cabrera's daughter only attended public schools in the Bronx. It is amazing how you are still believing the lies that Yudelka put out. Look out the source. She lied about her endorsements, she lied about Cabrera, she lied to the campaign finance board, she lied to her people.

If you care about District 14, you will rally around Cabrera to start bringing about change. He won and we must give him a change for the sake of the community. It is time to move forward into what really matters - the people.

    ReplyDelete
  22. You guys just need to see the real facts cabrera won just face it.He is the only one who can change the bronx. We did not need a person that just use the money for our district for her vacations and we don't need a person who lies about her endosements or her funds. To be honest with you your comments mean nothing because it was annouced that fernando cabrera is city council member for district 14. People just need to stop complaining and hope the best for our district which is on its way.for yudelka and baez supporters even though the person you supported did not win you guys still did your best but in this case we need to really look at reality because complaining is not gonna change the fact that cabrera won.

This was a great race everyone did what they had to do to win this race but the results are in and the winner is the winner let's just welcome him and be mature

  23. I'd vote for Patrick! He's the man, he'd get it done.

  25. You Can Call Me James..............James Bond!September 19, 2009 at 11:09:00 PM EDT

    WWOOOOWWW!!!!........

You people have to be kidding me!!!!......The election is over and theres still all these crazy people talking?.....what a buch of sore losers i see. I was up and out from 5am-9pm all day around the district and i could see how cruel and how crooked Yudelka and Baez's teams were. Both candidates were picking people up from the street and paying them from $30-$200 to stand at polling sites, hand out flyers and put up posters. I personally in my possession have videos from 6 individuals who were payed from team baez and team tapia. i also have a video of two people pissed at the fact that they both got picked from the street to work and they were both offered different amounts....LMBO!!....how funny was that.

Yudelka Tapia knew from the start that she was going to lose. Esoecially after passing by her office two nights in a row before election day and found her "EX CAMPAIGN MANAGER" Onix Sosa giving a small speach to a few people and conversing with the Tapia outside her office. she should be ashamed of herself. her desperation brought him back.

Maria Baez doesnt stay too far behind. This clown showed up on the corner of Jerome And Fordham Rd and tryed to hype up a bunch of people that didnt even know her. She was only there to pay them their petty cash for the screaming and shouting they were doing. She only showed up to hand out her petty cash.

But hey i can only speak for what i saw and i see that Baez had a empty losing celebration. LOL

Does anyone know if Tapia had a "victory" party?......

    But on to better things......

People please, lets just enjoy and look forward to the new leadership that has come to the District 14. Everything rises and falls on leadership and Cabrera will bring True Leadership to this district. like ive always said "you can argue with opinions and motives but you can never argue with results" and Fernando Cabrera has displayed the Results People.

and im totally with FengShua on that offer.....I WILL VOLUNTEER FOR PATRICK ANYDAY!!!!.....he knows where to find me

    James has left the blog................................

  26. is patrick the one who works for chairman carl heastie

  27. Yes but he lives in Queens.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Wasn't cabrera being considerably more than disingenuious when he put out campaign vans saying "true democrat"? He may be a lot of things, but a "true democrat" isn't one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cabrera is the winner......the community voted for him. So it's over.......!

Start your new campaign for next years race, I am sure Yudelka is planning to run again.

I guess she will run until she wins .... good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  30. The sad thing is that our community is the loser here. They voted 62% against Cabrera. The candidate was an outsider, his campaign manager was from Manhattan, 1199 bused in outsiders(a bus of 59 people)all outsiders. Yet county was only able to win by 69 votes. County wants to bring outsiders into our neigborhoods. They should go with the people that have been living here and raising their families here. Maybe someone should start to bring an outsider into Carl Heasties area see how he likes it. Yudelka for the future.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Congrats Cabrera. Please do us all a favor an stay true to yourself. Don't become a homophobic Rev. like Rev. Diaz, that speaks the lord's words on Sunday and then is SATAN the other 6 days of the week.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This person obviously knows nothing about elections. You are telling me if Yudelka would have won by the same percentage, that 62% voted against her? You are obviously wrong in your interpretation of the elections results. You obviously don't have the best interest of the community. those who do wouldn't be acting like you. Sad, sad, sad.

Our new city council member IS Fernando Cabrera. Congratulations! Now we are ready for real change.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yes 37 + 25 = 62%. 62% of the voters voted against Cabrera. No matter what you say. We understand that he won. BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THE COMMUNITY WANTED. IF THEY REALLY WANTED HIM. HE WOULD HAVE WON BY OVER 50% OF THE VOTE. With all the union support and county he was only able to win by 69 stolen votes. Ask Mark Rodriquez or Yudelka Tapia.
    THE COMMUNITY IS THE LOSER.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Can you guys please educate yourselves.....look at all of the incumbents that lost in multi-candidate races...those winners all got around 40%...to ask someone to get over 50% as a challenger in a 3 way race isn't fair. you guys just can't get over it. Yudelka lost for the 7th time.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Patrick, oops Juan, oops anonymous Bronx County went on record saying that their candidate would win with over 10%. This race in the Bronx was the must watch race in this city. This was not like does other races you are talking about. You based your 10% perdiction on the money you had to spend over $150,000, the hundreds of union volunteers bused in by 1199 and other union in huge buses (by the way). He should have gotten 40% or better. The Campaign Finance Board should look closely into how you people coordinated this campaign with your candidate. Again we know he won, but by only 69 stolen votes. Yudelka for the future

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anonymous last posted: You are bold and courages to post such things, why don't you give your name. Accept that fact the Yudelka is out. You sound like a sore looser. And yes this is what politics are about; endorsements, monies, etc come because they believe in who they endorse to represent them. I guess Yudelka did not work hard enough and did not convience them that she was the "right fit" for the job. The people who voted for her were based on her "racial" focus on the race. She insisted that she was the "only" dominican. CABRERA represents both....! As far as raised and spent .... Yudelka raised just as much...OH but wait she is under investigation for fraud, lying to the campaign board of finance. She took loans and did not report them. If she handled such a dirty campaign God knows how she would be as a city council. Either way Yudelka lost, wheather she came in second place head on with Cabrera - she still lost. She can't accept? I don't think there is another time for her, she has burned too many bridges. No one wants to support a liar, a racist!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I will tell you once again. I can't I.D. myself because you and your boses are ruthless and mean and will get me fired. Just as you got ANTHONY RIVIECCIO fired from his newspapaer simply for being with Yedulka Tapia. You do not tolerate differences of opinions. I do need to feed my family.

    ReplyDelete
  38. FYI: Anthony did not get fired because he supported Yudelka. He simply did not work out. He is a bad reporter and as a journalist...you can't take sides...I am sure there is more to the story.

Now if you say you need your job, why stay where you are? Find another job where you can be happy.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It is not because Anthony is a bad reporter. It is common knowledge that the BP office was not happy with his reporting. And that is why they insisted that he be fired. And as far as my job. Are you living in the same country we are, there are no jobs so even if I am not happy with your ruthless people I have a family to feed. So I don't know about you but family has to come first. I can keep letting people know the truth about county by posting my comments. That is a right your bosses can't take away from me. By the way did you read Kappstatter? He reported that Heastie and His BFF from Queens Pat Jenkins went to Dallas for a sport event. I wonder who paid for that trip.( What Developer) Espada was critized for taking his BFF Monserrate to a ball game in Yankee stadium that is in the Bronx.

    ReplyDelete
  40. LOL. Again, if you care about district 14, and if you live in district 14, realize that the election is over and now is time to rebuild. It is time to rally around Cabrera and begin working in this community. So are you up to the task?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Question to anonymous: Where is Yudelka now? She so claimed the community was with her, and now she dissappears? What she can't take it, another loss. Whare are all her people? You would think if she was such a team player she would speak and not burn her bridges. That only shows her character. And all those lies she spread .... bit her back.
