14th Election Results Won't Be Certified Until Thursday

The Norwood News is on deadline tonight and hoped to be able to declare, once and for all, who had officially won the the 14th District Council race.

Last we heard, challenger Fernando Cabrera was up on incumbent Maria Baez by 69 votes following an initial recount.

Alas, it was not meant to be. News reporter Molly Ryan found out earlier today that the Board of Elections will not certify the results until at least Thursday.

Earlier this morning, BOE spokesperson Valerie Vasquez-Rivera said the board would meet at 1 p.m. and that they would make a decision on certification by 3 p.m. But when Ryan called back at 3:30 p.m., Vasquez-Rivera (the wife of Baez-ally and Council majority leader Joel Rivera, in case you were wondering) said the board is still waiting for any snail mail absentee ballots to trickle into their offices and would make another certification call on Thursday.

In order to count toward the election, absentee ballots would have to be post-marked by election day, which was last Tuesday, Sept. 15.

So, rest assured, 14th Council District absentee voters in the heart of the Congolese jungle or rural Nepal, your vote will be counted.

Update: BOE spokesperson Valery Vasquez-Rivera just called us to point out that the Board's priority at yesterday's meeting was to certify the leaders in the public advocate and comptroller's races since there is a runoff for both planned for next Tuesday. No other close Council race, even one in Queens where the incumbent is ahead by only 5 votes, was certified yesterday. Stay tuned.

  1. What in the world? Unless there are 69 absentee voters that are unaccounted for, this election is over. This smells fishy.

  2. It smells really fishy. What's up with the Board of Elections? I've never seen anything like this before.

  3. I think that they need to investigate who is in that board. Snell mail, give me a break, it should have been delived already. Joel Rivera's wife, is in it with them. She is with the Jose Rivera clan.

They are trying to commit fraud, Maria lost, why would she want to stay when no one wants her.

  4. this is crap! Post marked by the 15th...yeah if i was in CHINA!!! This smells all wrong! I smell a sore loser...and potentially some cheating going on. I think the Rivera's should be investigated. And I think someone should take him out the 78th...who is running next for that!?

  5. There goes the Rivera people again! Trying to cheat....crooks. I hope Rivera is out next year. I will definetely will not vote for him and will help out who runs agains him.

By the way has anyone heard from Yudelka, what happened all of a sudden she is gone! PhOOOFFFF!

  6. Why is it that in other city council races in the city where it was above 30 vote difference they were certified, but in this race it was not certified? I smell fraud coming around the corner. They need to get rid of some of those people at the board of elections, including Joel Rivera's wife.

  7. It seems that Maria and Jose Rivera are not giving up. I agree they need to get rid of all the Rivera people. I am so glad Rivera will be out soon and his son and daughter need to go too.

  8. hmmmmmm!!!!! Let me make a guess......

Miraculously enough "absentee votes" come in to maybe not give Baez a win (that would be too fishy), but to maybe tie and force a runoff????? The Baez camp is sinking to new lows. I guess they want power at all costs.

And by the way...we all know that ballots can be "postmarked" by many diferent ways. Don't tell me that 69 ballots would be "lost" in the post office for over 8 days! They are buying time to "find" the voters!!!!

    Don't take us for fools!!!!!!!

Politics as usual in the Bronx!!!!!!!! There must be a lot of money involved!!!!!

  9. This is going to be a court battle. This just confirmed how evil and bad are the Rivera's and his followers. Talk about "mafia" style. That is why they need to go....I can't wait to see who will run against him. I am so ready to work for the other side.

  10. I'm going to make a prediction of tomorrow's news headline

"Cabrera and Baez Tie"- Board of Elections crooks certify that there was a tie and a runoff will soon be announced!" ...blah blah blah....lies lies lies....you fill in the rest

  11. My prediction: tomorrow Cabrera WILL be certfied.

  12. Dear Juan once again the facts are that the people that control the Board of Elections are Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz as Bronx County Leader and Stanley Schlein the Lawyer for Bronx County Democrat. If you google Stanley Schlein, in this city you will get articles from the Village Voice and other newspaper. It might help clear your head. The other boss is Anna Torres at the Board of Elections she is the wife of County Clerk Luis Diaz. Anna Torres can confirm that she only takes orders from Dinowitz or Schlein these are the facts. They cleaned house at the Board of Elections. Yudelka is still alive she is getting more votes in the recount.

  13. Tomorrows Prediction: Cabrera Wins!!

I think Baez has accepted her defeat. Why else would she go on vacation after the race.. She's tired, she's sick.. she needs rest.. this is too much work for her.. Quinn, Rivera and that whole machine has quit on this endeavor.. let's trust the system for once.. Let's believe in truth.. maybe they're just really busy..

BUT.. If the headline says anything else:

    C H E A T E R S!!!!! C H E A T E R S!!!

    lol

  14. If people would only get the facts right before posting comments it would be nice. But if they are just here to bash people then they are not stating facts. It it common knowledge that Bronx County Democrat control the B.O.E. and that is Jeffery Dinowitz and Stanley Schlein, So if you have a problem with the results call them.

  15. The responses were based on what it was reported in this post.

  16. Anonymous we can say the same about Yudelka's "so call facts" - when her and her people continously made false statements about Cabrera. So don't act like you are so righteous.

  17. Cabrera 2,108
    Baez 2,033
    Tapia 1,330

Now let's get down to business and start working together toward turning things around. If you really care about this district, you will rally around our new leader and make a difference.

  18. So are you saying that it is not the truth that the B.O.E. is controlled by Jeff Dinowitz Bronx County Leader and Stanley Schlein. Then please tell me who is? Maybe you should speak to Anna Torres and get your facts right. What was reported was that a spokeperson for the B.O.E. made the statement.

  19. I don't know who you are addressing in this blog. My point is that Bronx News Network reported news in this blog that the final certification would come on Tuesday. Then, it was changed to Thursday because they were awaiting more ballots to come in. My response is based on what the BOE reported and its reason for doing so. All in all, it really does not matter, because tomorrow will be the final certification. It is time to move forward. People will have their opinions and interpretations of the elections results. But the real issue here is what everybody was claiming to be the real issue - the people of the 14th district.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hey Jordan Moss maybe you should step in and educate your posters. By letting them know that BOE in the Bronx and downtown is influenced by Bronx County Leader Jeff Dinowitz and their lawyer Stanley Schlein.

  21. You guys all need to get a life!!! At this point Cabrera is the new Councilman. Get over it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Its so funny to see how the Cabrera camp is now losing sleep over the recount. By this time you guys would have thought to be sleeping soundly after taking part in the big bad fraud on election day...So now you have the nerve to cry "Fraud! Fraud!" This is really sad. I'm sure Cabrera and the Democratic Political machine will get their way..but in the interim keep counting the votes!
By the way...why didn't Cabrera assign any poll watchers on election day? According to reports only Baez & Tapia had poll watchers...hmm......thats's right, the guy didn't need ANY! Everyone working the polls had been appointed by Hector Ramirez the district leader and that's right, Hector Ramirez was a fervent support of Rev.Cabrera...

NOW THAT IS FISHY! WHAT A FIASCO!

    ReplyDelete
  23. The 14th district is what really matters here. Can we agree to work together to improve our community? Even though Cabrera IS the BEST candidate!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I noticed how Baez, and Tapia were both attacking Cabreara and neither had anything to say about each other. That alone tells us who they think is best for the job.

    ReplyDelete
  25. FERNAAANDOOO! CABREEERAAAAAA!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Both Beaz and Tapia had every right to tell the community about Fernando Cabrera's carpet-bagging ways and Republicanism. It was a fair argument. Both camps also pointed out that Cabrera did not assign any poll watchers on election day. Can anyone explain or give an excuse for this? Is there something bigger at work here? (Please don't say God)

    ReplyDelete
  27. To cheated democrat.....you talk about the lies of CABRERA - how about Maria's history and Yudelka's fraud regarding her campaing funds.

If you are so disappointed, then you should move out.....Maybe you can rent Cabrera's house in Pelham....or move to New Rochelle next to Maria Baez...or next to Yudelka along with her "getto" friends.

You claim you have inside information....why ask the bloggers, why don't you ask your bosses?????? as you such claim.

    ReplyDelete
  28. First, I dont have a boss. Secondly, I ask because this is no INSIDE information as you are claiming. It is no LIE that Fernando Cabrera was a registered Republican for over 10 years. It is no lie that Fernando Cabrera moved to his brand new Sedgewick Apt last summer. In addition when I asked Election day coordinators what candidate had assigned poll watchers, Fernando Cabrera's name never came up. I as a blogger have the right the throw that out there. It is a quite interesting fact. All the above is Fact that cannot be refuted.

I refuse to move out my neighborhood in which I was raised and have a family. I'm glad you admit that Cabrera does have a home in Westchester. But I'll pass on your offer. As for Maria Baez, she is registered has being a resident of Davidson Avenue, plus New Rochelle will make my commute to work impossible. So I'll pass on that offer. As for Yudelka Tapia, who is registered as a resident of 180th street, are you also calling all the residents of 180th "getto" or did you mean "ghetto" ?. Also please define ghetto it would not be nice to be calling Bronx residents ghetto. But since I'm a Bronx resident, I'll pass on that offer as well.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You keep at it over and over again. Even if Cabrera were to answer your questions you are still not satisfied. Only because your candidate loss.

    ReplyDelete
  30. To the cheated Bronx democrat....District leaders are the ones who appoint inspectors...not candidates. This is why Cabrera didn't appoint inspectors.

    ReplyDelete
  31. District leaders appoint poll workers and coordinators. The district leader in district 14 is Hector Ramirez. If I'm not mistaken Mr.Ramirez supported and campaigned for Fernando Cabrera. I'm saying this is a conflict of interest. But anyhow, Cabrera never appointed poll watchers...a poll watcher is someone that represents the campaign and goes to a poll site to observe that the voting process is done fairly. Now all candidates except Cabrera appoint poll watchers on election day. My assumption would be it is because he did not need to because the appointed poll workers and coordinators were assigned by the District leader Hector Ramirez. Is any of this information inaccurate? Explain, why or why not. Cheers!

  33. How can you blame a man for coming from a nice neighborhood to ours to make a difference? I dont see how Cabrera's former residence has any baring on how well he could do the job.

At least now, he lives right where he needs to be. Also, if Baez lived anywhere near Davidson avenue dont you think the drugs, and violence would not exist so close to home?

I feel that ghetto is the wrong word for Tapia and company. I feel that she was just a pawn in a great game of chess. Her staff waisted time, talent, energy, and drive for a candidate who was not even meant to win.

But she is kind of off in the head so to speak.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I dont blame Cabrera, I'm just calling him a carpetbagger.

Carpetbagger = a nonresident or new resident who seeks gain from an area often by meddling in its business or politics.

I also feel that the district leader Hector Ramirez's endorsement of Cabrera displayed a severe conflict of interest. After all this is the guy that appointed the people who would work on election day. Wouldn't you agree?

I do agree that Maria Baez was in effective.

I don't fully understand your metaphors regarding Tapia and the chess game. Who is to say that a candidate is not meant to win? Was her defeat preordained?
