News of the Day for Oct. 12

Happy Columbus Day! A rather slow news day here on the North Side (Remember North Side Savings Bank, which then became North Fork, which is now Capital One? Well North Side is what the Bronx used to be called way back when before the incorporation of Greater New York City. Don't believe me? Check out this Times article from 1897. As I said, a slow news day ...)

The Times blog, City Room, looks at how Belmont/Little Italy merchants in the Bronx are faring amidst the economic downturn.

Bill Thompson, the Democratic candidate for mayor skipped the Columbus Day Parade in Morris Park and went to New St. John’s Baptist Church in the Bronx instead.

State Senator Jeff Klein has sponsored legislation to allow domestic violence victims to not list the address of their residences when applying for car insurance, filling a prescription, or completing other routine transactions that would alert abusers to the current location of their victims.
