An effort to create an urban farm in the South Bronx has sparked a turf war between activists and the Parks Department.
Two years after the borough president and local councilwoman put up the money to begin a renovation of Fox playground, which serves Longwood and Hunts Point, but two days after a street fair to build support for Libertad Urban Farm, the Parks Department announced it would begin to renovate the playground.
Activist Tanya Fields, who is spearheading the effort to transform a shabby, unused portion of the park into a community garden, is crying foul.

This is Mark Rodriguez of The Political Parent Party and I must say how sad that such a great program like the Libertad Urban Farm would not be supported by the Parks Department. I know Tanya Fields from Mothers on The Move and she is a fantastic community activist. Her program would definitely help the community by not offering just fresh produce but also providing work opportunities to the people. I strongly urge everyone to call or write Park Commissioner Hector Aponte and tell him to give up some of the park land for a worthwhile project. Don't worry Tanya, when I run for the Assembly of District 83 in 2010 you will have my full support in urban farming! You go Girl!
