The Yankees, Unobstructed- October 9

I'll be commenting on this post throughout tonight's game. Feel free to join in.

With a little under twenty minutes until game time. Here are some stats to be mindful of tonight.

Tonight's starters -

Nick Blackburn: On the one hand, he's coming off four consecutive wins and during that stretch he's managed a 1.65 era. On the other hand, the Yankees are explosive against Blackburn. They've scored 12 runs in 18.1 innings lifetime against him, and gotten on-base at a tremendous .393 clip.

A.J. Burnett: Burnett has been slightly above average against the Twins, lifetime. A 3.27 era and a 1.37 whip. Burnett claims he "clicks" well with tonight's starting catcher Jose Molina. Hopefully that's a legit claim — Burnett is just another in a long line of pitchers who do not like Jorge Posada's pitch selection.

Just to scare you: The last three times the Yankees won the first game of the Divisional, they went on to lose that series.

Just to scare you more: If the Yankees win this Series, no matter what, they will have to face either the Los Angeles California Angels of Anaheim Southern California or the Red Sox. The two teams that are most comfortable hurting our feelings....

  3. 6:21 So far so good for A.J. and Molina. Feel free to walk Joe Mauer whenever he gets up.

  4. 6:55 How about that! Throwing a strike on an 0-2 count, that's a gutsy move. Burnett looks sharp right now.

That probably won't fool Mauer again.

  5. Through 4 innings, Nick Blackburn has continued his hot streak of late. 0 hits for the Yanks.

  6. 7:08 Back-to-back hit-batsmen for A.J. Burnett. For other pitchers that usually means big trouble, for Burnett it's routine.

  7. 7:10 If you didn't watch this game, but you want to show your kid an excellent example of heads up baseball. Get a clip of the last out of the top of the fourth inning.

  8. 7:32 It's hard to believe the Twins have only had two hits so far....because they've gotten six men on base.

  9. 8:17 How about that A-ROD? Two big hits in two games in the playoffs.

  10. 8:30 Solid bullpen management by Girardi. With a day off coming tomorrow, there's no harm in playing matchup out-to-out tonight. Phil Coke made Kubel look silly.

  11. 9:00 A rare run given up by Phil Hughes. I hate the idea of bringing Mariano Rivera into a game without the lead. He's not nearly as good in these situations.

  12. 9:45 Another two out walk for Yankee relief (le sigh).

  13. 10:02 Bottom of the 10th, Jeter at-bat with Brett Gardner on 2nd. Perfect opportunity to end this thing.

  14. 10:04 Ron Gardenhire has few precious hairs left, and Joe Nathan's errant throw to the outfield may have just robbed Gardenhire of half his crop.

  15. 10:16 Left field umpire just made one of the worst calls I've ever seen. A double becomes a foul ball and Yankee fans feel cheap while Twins fans feel cheated.

  16. 10:30 Dave Roberson gets out of an 11th inning bases loaded 0 outs jam! Tex and AROD coming up next. If the Yankees win, Minnesota fans will complain about that blown call — those will be rational complaints – but there's no excuse for not scoring just now.

  17. 10:31 Mark Teixeira just shot a LAZER into the stands. Game.
